The Necessary Evil is a stainless steel beast that can do an astounding number of things well. The super solid frame won’t rust, and can stand up to anything you throw at it. Built for utility, the Necessary Evil has mounts for 3 bottle cages (!), rack and fender mounts, and huge clearance for 700c/29" or 650b/27.5" tires. Front and rear thru axles (12x100/12x142) keep everything solid and precise, as does the 1 1/8"-1 1/2" tapered fork. Double-butted 2205 Stainless Steel tubing provides a smooth, extremely comfortable ride, regardless of terrain. Frame accommodates either 700c/29" (as currently built) or 650b/27.5" wheels. This frame is a prototype version, without the CNC-machined bottom bracket yoke, so is a bit lighter and has slightly shorter chainstays (which makes it nimble enough for cyclocross – I did podium at one race on this sweet baby :)).
The build:
The excellent Shimano Ultegra 6800 hydraulic flatmount disc brake groupset for smooth shifting, powerful braking, and top-end performance. Tubeless and strong, the 32x WTB i21 wheels handle everything you throw at them. Swept back Specialized AWOL handlebar gives a variety of hand positions and works well whether in a tight and twisty cross course or when weighted down for touring – and also handles a bar bag for bikepacking perfectly. (27.2mm) Thomson seatpost and Brooks Cambium saddle are about as tops as it gets. A primo 44mm Chris King headset takes care of steering duties, of course. *pedals not included.
