I do my workouts in the evening. The problem is I crash hard from 4-5 oclock, and sometimes dont have the energy (mentally) to do a good workout.
I tried these 5 hour energy drinks occasionally, and they seem to help. I can get a really good session in.
Are these things safe? A good idea? I would rather have a natural way to boost my energy. Im 46, and workout about 4-5 days a week. I get plenty of rest.
I don’t see any problem with occasional use. Do you have trouble getting to sleep after taking one in the evening? Is there much difference between what you’ve used and something like Red Bull or the plethora of other energy drinks?
In my slightly educated opinion, the only ingredients that are both
A. proven to actually give you ‘energy’ in any sense
and
B. provided in large enough dose to do so
are the caffeine
In my subjective experience, having tried one
it makes me feel no different than a caffeine pill
I could be wrong
Also, I reccomend people get off massive doses of caffeine as a regular habit. It sucks being a slave to it. Switch to green tea to replace your coffee habits. You get a low dose that doesn’t make you dependant on it to get through the day or your training. But its enough to get you through the morning =)
they are just caffeine, its no different than coffee
coffee is cheaper
While these 5 hour energy shots are probably better then most full sized energy drinks, there are more to them then coffee.
Still, coffee is not only probably better for you then these shots, but (IMO) coffee is proof there is a God!
Best you can do is take a nap. Either at noon or right after work about 30 minutes. This will be more effective than energy drinks. You have to get enough sleep, there is no substitude for this!
I love the macho age groupers talking about they sleep 3 hours and wake at 3 AM to put in 6 hour bike rides.
That time of day is hard for me too. I find having a small bit of sugar, like a piece of fruit, plus sucking it up usually gets me through it. I’ve tried napping and that doesn’t usually help that late in the day. (I can nap successfully earlier in the day.) If it’s a workout that I really need a boost for, I’ll make myself an espresso just beforehand. But only for a long effort: for an hour-long workout, the impact on my sleep isn’t worth the boost that I get.
Thanks for the info all. I have to limit myself to 2 small watered down cups of coffee in the morning because I get real jittery otherwise. This
stuff doesnt effect me that way. I think the naps are essential. I think that The season has worn me down also. After a half marathon on sunday I need to take a long break.
