#1 3/4 miles into my Sat 3 hr ride I hit a pothole going 35mph downhill - flat in the rear tire.
#2 1/2 mile later I hit a rock and blew out my front tire.
#3 Tube to replace the front won’t hold air. I’m done for the day, out of tubes and out of CO2. Walk of shame for the 1 mile home.
Monday:
#4 Ready to ride, rear tire low on air. Tire blew up at 90psi while pumping it up.
#5 Switched tire and put in a new tube - Tire blew at again around 85-90psi. I’m done, again.
The good news is that I had a great running weekend as I substituted 11 mile runs for the bikes. This weekend swam 3000 yards and ran 22 miles. Gotta go to my lbs today with my magically exploding rims. Don’t touch me, I’m jinxed.
I feel your pain. I’m feeling good this past Sunday on the Queen K highway, cruising on the bike course with a big trade-tailwind. Then Pele decides to bite me on the butt with the help of Steinlager beer bottles – first tubular blowout takes care of my only CO2 cartridge (took the chance that the tufo sealant would work, uh uh). Darren from HP pedals shows up after about 7 minutes, and we get my spare on. Once again I get to say hi to my slower friends until Pele hits me again 20 min later with more broken glass, this time front tire. Once again I sit in the nice Hawaiian sun and lava until an angel of mercy shows up with a spare front wheel. So much for tubulars being more flat resistant than clinchers.
But the “modified” Keauhou run course managed to make me forget all about my woes on the bike course. The new hills make the Pit look like an a speed bump.
yeah, lots of flats out there. friend of mine had two as well. I got lucky and my front tufo survived the budwiser bottle attack. Did you see the surveyor’s tacks out there on that one weird looking shoulder section coming back with the spiderwebby black stuff on the road? Check out my post on the run profile, 500+ foot ascent
No I missed the surveyor’s tacks but believe me I was looking hard for glass on the way back. Great post on the elevation gain/loss on the run – how did you measure it – GPS?
my polar 720i has altitude and temp, can’t wait for my new 625 which has run speed as well as all the cool bike features. yeah, lots of glass on the road, I’m soooo glad the sun was blazing so it made it easy to see the glass… Imagine if it had been cool and overcast, that would have been horrible!
For me, flat tires come in bunches. Last year I rode a couple of patched up tubes and never had a flat. In the past month I’ve had 10 flats- with new tires!!!
My philosophy is if a tire is holding air, never, never, never, do anything to it. You will jinx it.
