400m repeats: concept2 rowing erg vs running

I am waiting for the snow to melt on the local track to see how my running is progressing and going some track repeats.

In the mean time, I have been doing sets of 8x400m with 100m cruise on the concept 2 (so I am entering each 400m with a rolling start). I take the 100m as easy as I want (jogging perceived effort) and then launch into the 400m like I am on the track. I am trying to hold 1:52-1:55 per 500m which is 90-93 second 400m pace. This seems to translate to the perceived exertion when I used to run track intervals. Right now my running is not so good, so my guess is that my running 400’s will be around 10 seconds slower at the similar perceived exertion.

I would image that those of you who are heavy weight rowers won’t have any correlation to your running times, but those who are lightweight rowers, its going to be pretty close.

If anyone wants to go experiment I would be interested to see where your running vs rowing 400m splits are (and I get running works on multiples of 400m on the track and rowing on multiples of 500m).

When I was rowing lightweight in college, I would have done 400m around 1:40/500 pace. That would put 400s at 80 seconds. My last year running track in high school, I would do my 400 repeats around 68-70 seconds.

Yeah, numbers don’t translate too good for us big boys!! Kinda an inverse relationship for us.

This is why I mentioned it might align for the lighweight rowers. I am sure when I was young and had the legs and engine to do 70-75 second repeats on the 400m track, I am certain that there is no way II would be able to hold 1:33 pace on the erg. That is 433Watts. I would have been 138 lbs and that would be 6.9 kilos for that duration. I doubt I would have had the physiology.

Now at 54 years old, with the run a lot slower and 7 lbs heavier the rowing is “faster” but I don’t think it should be that much faster. It would be fun to put a rowing erg in the middle of the track and alternate between the two sports and see.

I was doing 8x400m on the erg today after a 90 min hill run and holding around 1:52-1:55 (which would translate into 90 seconds-93 seconds). I will see where I can get running, but I would like to see how close I can get by end of year on a 10x400m set for each sport. I will be doing well if I can get this down to 100 seconds.

Yeah well, since I likely have very little rowing power now and I’m probably a better faster runner than 20 years ago, the numbers are probably pretty close now like you!

How fast do you think your 400m run time is now for a 10x400 set?
