So my Garmin 310xt won’t turn on or charge. It worked fine during my swim/bike this morning–not a single problem. I called tech support at Garmin and despite several soft and hard resets I couldn’t get it to power on. So off to Garmin for a warranty repair the 310 goes. But here are my questions:
Has anyone had this problem? if so, do you know the cause or a solution?
I noticed today (when trying to figure out why it wouldn’t turn on) that the rubber on power, up and down buttons was worn. Does anyone else have this problem. Could this small amount of wear allowed water to get into the watch during my swim?
I began using this in January and it gets a lot of use, but I’d expect more out of the 310. And a word to other 310xt users, I (of course) haven’t downloaded this weeks workouts so now they are completely lost, so don’t wait to download until the weekend because you never know when the device will not power on.
Happened to me during the first month, so any sort of wear was unlikely to be the problem (in my case). Happened shortly after I started using multimode function in latest update, don’t know if causal.
Garmin was great about immediately replacing my unit.
I’ve had this problem with my 205, and if the 310xt works the same (I’m not sure if it does),
you can just hold down the “mode” and the “reset” buttons at the same time for a few seconds,
and it will turn on.
Nope, didn’t work on my 310xt and I’d guess Garmin support had OP try that unsuccessfully as well. Sometimes it does, and sometimes we are out a unit for a few days until the replacement arrives.
Tech support had me hold done the Mode + down button. When that didn’t work it was the Mode + reset. Then it was the Mode for 6 seconds + power. When that didn’t work I had to go to the UPS store and ship it to Garmin. Garmin says that immediately upon receipt they’ll ship a replacement. It is just so curious since the 310 was working perfectly all day. Glad to know it wasn’t the wear on the buttons.
To be perfectly frank I’ve gone through so many Garmin’s in recent years that if there was a decent competitor with GPS and heart rate I’d probably give them a try. My 310XT has started having occasional screen problems where the screen is suddenly just filled with random dots. And the ANT wireless connector is totally unreliable.
Hate to have to ship ANOTHER unit back to them for warranty but I’ll probably have to.
I have had this Garmin Forerunner 301XT since February 2014 and there have been no issues. Now after charging it overnight it is completely dead! Try to reset and nothing happens. Can anyone recommend a solution seeing how I can out of warranty?
My experience is that they self-destruct after 1-2 years of heavy use.

Mine didn’t get that bad, but would barely hold a charge. I sent it to http://www.fixyourgps.com/default.asp and had the battery replaced for under $50 IIRC. Good as new now.
My 800 was traded for a refurb model from garmin, which was $100.
