Is 3 weeks enough time to go from a half marathon to full marathon (PR in both). Obviously training for the full marathon.
tt
.
are you asking if 3 weeks is enough rest after an all our half marathon to then do a full marathon?
probably, assuming you were well prepared for the half and it didn’t kill you, and you have no nagging injuries.
you might end up better preared for the full marathon if you did something other than an all our half marathon three weeks out though.
I like how you think you’ll PR in both.
Seriously - attitude is half of it! Be positive ![]()
If you didn’t do the 1/2 what would your run be on that day? Is running the 1/2 going to compromise something that would be better prep for the marathon?
something to think about
Running the half as hard as you can? That’s a hard double. They say it takes the number of mile in the race in days to recover (ie…13 mile race + 13 days of recovery), and that’s simply until you can return to normal training loads.
Yes, it can be done, but its risky. If you seriously want to do well at the marathon, I would run the half as a hard workout and nothing more. 13.1 at marathon goal pace. No faster.
Thanks for the input coach - it makes sense. Now what should I just do my normal training load for that week (keep it the same or a small taper,…)? I’m following Pfitzinger’s 70 mile per week or less - it will be exactly 21 days after the half mary until the full marathon; ran on Saturday as well.
Monday - Cross Train or Rest
Tuesday - Recovery 6 mile a.m. & 4 mile p.m.
Wednesday - VO2 max - 11 miles w/ 6 x 1200m @ 5k race pace w/2min jog between
Thursday - Medium Long run 14 miles
Friday - General Aerobic 8 miles + Speed 8x100 strides
Saturday - Recovery 5 miles (next week he has a 8-10k tune-up race and the previous week is a 15k - why I thought it might be possible for an all out half mary)
Sunday - long run 20 miles
Total - 68 (taper begins after this week)
Also would swimming be beneficial on Monday’s or should I just take a complete rest? If so how much or how long?
Thanks!
If you’re related to Chris McDonald, I’d say you’ll PR in both races. He won IM Wisconsin last year, just 1 week after finishing 2nd at IM Louisville.
I’m relatively slow, but just 3 weeks after my marathon PR at TCM, I did the MCM just 10 minutes slower. My intent was to “survive” MCM, as my legs felt only about 50% recovered. I went out easy, and was surprised to be on PR pace through 13 miles. So I changed my goal to PR that day, but Hanes Point got me. Even though I’d done the race before, and knew that was the most isolated part of the course, mentally I caved, and that’s how I lost the time.
But had I planned to PR in that race, I think I could have done it, 3 weeks from my marathon PR.
So I say HECK YES, you can do PR in both races. Focus more on the mental side…you’ve got to really want it.
Good Luck !!!
