Ok, long weekend, looks like nice weather (at least here in the northeast).
What the heck are yall planning on doing this weekend? Anything epic going on?
I’m headed up to Placid with my training partner to ride a couple laps on the bike course and get a long run in. (She’s prepping for IMLP and I’m looking to FirmMan1/2)
Let’s hear what your up to.
Oh, and since this post is meant to be a triathlon post, please don’t reply with “Paint the fence”, “Throw B-day party for the kid”, or “Dropping a 354 in my Chevy”…… but “mtbing in Slickrock” is an acceptable reply
This weekend my plans are to sell a ton of Felts at our Memorial Day Sale,
Do the eight mile run up the Iron Brigade road here in Dearborn to the War memorial honoring the fallen Dearborn residents from all wars and do some long rides.
My girlfriend is headed up north to her family’s place with her girlfriends for a camping trip on their property so I am solo this weekend. We’re having dinner tonight before she leaves.
I’m going up to Flagstaff for the weekend and trying to do some good climbing in this weekend. Gotta buy a tent before I head up there though. Anyone know where to camp up in flagstaff?? What are the best climbs in flagstaff? Best bike shops?
I get to do a 4 day stage race, still can’t decide Pro/123 or Masters 35. It starts with a 9 mile TT and has a nice 76 mile RR and two circuit races. I’d have to go 90 with the big guys and my back would revolt, but the field is larger and it feels better to be in the big show, we’ll see.

REI is having their huge annual sale through Monday - so you might look for a tent there.
Flagstaff Camping - I stayed here last year: http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/recreation/peaks/bonito-camp.shtml It’s very nice, but I don’t think they take reservations, so there might not be any sites available. “Dispersed” camping (i.e., away from developed campsites) is allowed in the Coconino National Forest, but you might want to review some rules that apply to that on the website.
Best Climb - I’m not really familiar with all of the road rides up there, but climbing the Snowbowl Road must be a good climbing workout…
Also - there is a 3-day bike race (Summit Center Classic - omnium) taking place this weekend in Flag: http://www.flagvelo.com It might be fun to do, if you’re so inclined, or ride the routes - Lake Mary Road is nice riding with some decent hills.
Weather permitting, I’ll probably ride to/from work Friday and then take the dogs out for an EZ run when I get home. Saturday is long ride day…going out to Lake Geneva, WI with a group from the club - should end up with 120+ miles, and then if I can feel my legs I’ll try to make myself run a couple miles with the dogs again. Sunday will probably be a swim day…gotta rest the legs for the traditional Memorial Day brick. Me and a buddy are riding ~35 miles out to a 10 mile road race. After that, it’s time for some serious ‘rehydration’ and BBQ’d nutrition.
Friday - Off work, 7-mile run in am and 1,500 yd swim in pm - going to sunset at the beach with my fiancé and some friends, back to my house for dinner.
Saturday- 50 miles am ride, take fiancé to golf lesson and easy 3 mile run pm – cookout with friends.
Sunday- LSD run about 14 miles – golf game in afternoon – community party in pm
Monday- run in am 5 miles, community golf tourny and swim in pm 1,500 yds weight room after dinner.
Keauhou Tri is this weekend in Kona. Hubby will help Whit Raymond with some of the announcing. I’m in charge of the awards. That will fill our Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Monday will be used to unpile from the last three days.
Heading up to Xantusia with a bunch of folks from my club. It’ll be interesting since I haven’t ridden my bike in about 4 weeks. Gonna get my ass kicked!! Maybe some skydiving on Monday, if not then I’m going to take Wednesday off to get my fix. Either way, it looks like I’m not goinng to get much work done next week.
I’m on call all weekend…Friday and Monday, too! But, it’s not all bad, I’ll be “doing loops” near the hospital on my bike(s), and going across the street to the University campus to swim and work on my core strength exercises (see “Maylene” if you don’t believe core workouts are worth it!). It would be great if I could get in 100 miles on the bike for a change, that’s “epic” for me…gonna need the saddle time when the Duke Blue Devil Ironman arrives in October…I’m much more accustomed to “all-out” for 25-40 miles than I am steady efforts for longer distances.
Still in recovery mode from a half IM last weekend, but Monday I’m planning a sprint tri about two hours from home. It’s a half mile/20 mile/5K race on a hilly course. Couple of people from my local club are doing the race, so we’ll probably do it as a social event, not an all out hammerfest. Been wanting to do this race for two years, so I hope my plans hold together for the next few days.
Is nobody (other than Tom D.) doing anything actually associated with the real meaning of Memorial Day? Has it just become another long weekend? I know it mostly has down here in NW Florida as we get our annual “invasion” of hundreds of thousands of the gay and lesbian community to the beach. Maybe this will at least cause some to pause and remember:
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amidst the guns below
We are the dead
Short days ago we lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow
Loved and were loved and now we lie
In Flanders fields
Take up our quarrel with a foe; To you from falling hands we throw

You should consider the “State Line 60” in Rockford…a few big players from Madison Tri clubs (and a pro or two) said that they are going. Leaving the start at 7:30 am on Sat…I hear they may just do the course twice. I would like to but I have to drive out to Nebraska…damnit.
Sunday: I’m doing a 100K hilly ride with 4000 ft of veriitcal to the start of the National Capital Marathon (ottawa canada). At the race, I’m the 90 min pace bunny for the half marathoners, so I’ll have my work cut out doing a 90 min half marathon off a 100K ride. After that, chow down and ride 25K back to house and curl up in the fetal position and hope that my son does not ask me to play soccer with him or take him mountain biking. I could handle going the Harry Potter premiere after the half marathon brick session, but that would be about it !
Sounds like it could be fun - unfortunately, I was reminded of a dinner date with some friends, so I’m on a bit of a schedule Saturday. Might have to cut the Lake Geneva ride short, otherwise I’ll be jumping off the bike, into the shower and back out the door. I’m sure I’d be pretty worthless that evening. Too bad you’re road-tripping this weekend…we could use more company out there on the backroads. Safe travels!
