Well, my genes are finally catching up with me. My father has a perfect “bald” hairline with a shiny circle of baldness right in the middle of his head (he has a few long hairs he uses as a comb over). My brother, took the shortcut and started shaving his head 4-5 years ago.
I really don’t want to flat out razor shave my head. I’d look more ridiculous than I do now with this partially balding head. Anyone here gone with a 1 or 0 look and felt OK or even more confident with it? I’m currently sitting at 1-2 inches of hair up top, but it kindof makes the balding areas stick out. I think going with a 1 on the trimmer would look a little more normal, and I’m assuming there’s some other baldies here who have taken that route over going Gillette on your scalp
PS - no, I’m not going to do treatment to try and make hair grow back.
I’m a tad older than you, but deal with the same issue…initially I bic’d it smooth for a few years, but then have decided there’s still enough to just buzz it down to a zero setting on the clippers—not quite as shiny.
My genes caught up with me a few years earlier than you! I’ve been clipping my hair to either a short 1 or a long 0 since I was 22, nearly 16 years ago now. I’ve never razor shaved, I did do a short 0 once by mistake and was amazed how much difference the odd millimetre makes…
For me, having a short covering of hair looks much better than going fully shaved. Took me a little while to get used to the idea that it was gone but once I did realised the advantages:
I never have a bad hair day
Since purchasing a set of Wahl clippers 16 years ago, my total outlay on haircuts and hair products has been $0
Potential spouses never had to worry about what I’d look like if I went bald
The only slightly annoying thing for me is that my 69 year old Dad still has more hair than I did aged 21. I guess my Mum is to blame for my genes!
My hairline started a steady retreat in my early 30s, so I did the #1 size (whatever the smallest stock guard is) clipper thing for a few years there… That was OK. I clipper’d it once a week.
I got tired of doing that, so I started shaving my head… I just use my Braun electric shaver each morning - face, then head. Just takes a couple of minutes each day, so easy-peasy maintenance.
Try out the bald thing for a while - you might like it, and it’s easy enough to grow it out if you want to go back to just a short clip…
Oh, and as far as blades go… I tried using a blade once. Once. My bathroom and head looked like something out of a “Saw” movie - there was fekking blood everywhere. Never again.
Just stick with an electric shaver - it’s not quite as close as a blade, but good enough, and I was never a fan of the super-shiny bald-head look anyway.
Good stuff - yeah, my sides/back still come in thick. My issue is I’m really starting to thin out up top and the longer it is, the more noticeable it is.
Will probably test out a 1 and see how it pans out. A little scared to go straight to a 0, but I guess it could always grow out a millimeter, right?

I have the same problem, the sides/back are still fully hirsute, the follicles on top are few and far between! I actually prefer it shorter because the longer it is, the more obvious the difference between sides and top becomes.
Just do it. Ive been using a 1 or 0 for about ten years. Its amazing how much money and time you save. Ive even started using the 0 for my face. Havent touched a razor for 4 or 5 years now.

0 actually isn’t that bad. Leaves some stubble. The only way to get rid of that is to take the razor out and trim it to the wood. 0 is typically my ‘summer do’. Go with it. Feels great!
Every month or so I let my 6 year old go wild with the buzzer. Then my wife cleans it up with a safety razor. No bad hair days, instant dry head, and this spring I grew a big ole’ handlebar moustache so I was a little bit badass (as badass as I could be while driving in a minivan).
I’m in the try shaving it bald once camp. I did it for a few years and really liked it. Look up Head Blade. Super easy to use, I used it and nicked myself maybe once or twice in the first few weeks; after that, nada. I’ve done the 0 thing before too. Truthfully bald is easiest because you can just shave your head right in the shower instead of using shampoo. Only adds a minute or two to the routine.
I am 48 now and use a razor on my skull - takes two minutes in the shower every other day to keep it shaved…but like you I started losing my hair back in my late early 30s and got sick of paying for it to be trimmed so I bought a good clipper and over time kept trimming it shorter and shorter. Don’t worry, bald is sexy these days!
I’m 40, have about as much hair as the fellow from Snatch up there (Jason Something). I buzz it to about that length - 1/8" or so. I just hit it with the clippers about once per week. I’ve taken it to the wood a few times…took me waaay longer than 2 minutes. I suppose there’s a learning curve there though.
