2632 people!

I just looked again at the list for Lake Placid…2632 people. I mean I can imagine that a couple hundred might drop out so 2400 on the course?!! That seems like a lot.
M~

That’s a lot of bikes!

Crazy! Those races are too packed.

I feel lucky! Canada has only 2607. This is starting to get ridiculous. The participant numbers seems to be increasing each year but a corresponding number of no shows seems to be increasing as well. I figure 2200 for Canada. Thank goodness for Richter Pass to break up some of the packs. Last year the first 40 miles had lots of packs. My only redemption was I yelled at a guy for drafting and when I looked up his number after the race I saw a DNF!

Yeah, I noticed that too. There were almost 2000 last year. Well, what’s another few hundred?

Anyone else get the email on Monday from IMNA stating that the race bib numbers would be available within a day (that would be Tuesday). Still don’t see the bib numbers.

The sport needs to make a choice. Drafting or smaller fields. The crying about drafting has gotta stop. Ya with me big LC! High five!

This is what pisses me off - despite the fact more people are entering, the entance price keeps going up!

And drafting - don’t get me started- us middle of the pack racers always have to be concerned about a marshall being around to slap you with a penalty fro a situation your can’t avoid.

Finally- I’m not looking forward to the Keene descent. last year I almost" bit the big one" when a fellow racer cut me off at 47 mph

Yeah I got that email. I was hoping to get it too.

I plan on taking it nice and slowish down to Keane. What do you really gain by screaming down that hill…1 minute? When I went screaming down that last time I felt my body tense up so I slowed down and relaxed and felt much better. That muscle contraction can’t be good for you in a race. But I thought about that too. I wouldn’t have wanted to do that 2 years ago in the pouring rain.

Why does that piss you off? If you ran a buisness where you could raise prices and still have people begging for your product wouldn’t you?

Focus on the quality and longivity of the product and not trade short term windfalls with long term losses.

What long tern losses? The few hard core guys who view this as a lifestyle? Whent he Ironman fad dies and all the hated first timers and TNT people leave the few hardcore won’t be able to keep these races going. Strike while the iron is hot.

I can’t believe I am saying this  but I have to agree with Tibbsy boy. I would absolutely increase the price if my events were selling out in two days. There is obviously a huge demand for IM races and from what I have heard the quality is still good. People will overlook the drafting and the congestion to race an IM race. People will still bitch about it but they will still pay to do them.

You agree with me all the time. Just admit it and be free.

Maybe we are seeing the start. AZ and CDA are still not full. More alternatives but the M-dot races will always do well given they do give you great support and put on a very good race. Once a year at $400 dollars doesn’t seem so bad. We have had this debate before on drafting and prices. If you want to ride legal you can 98%+ of the time. There will always be a few packs early in the race but from Richter Pass on you can ride within the rules. That 5 to 10 minutes of questionable riding means very little when you have 5:00 hours + of non drafting and you still have to run a marathon.

And drafting - don’t get me started- us middle of the pack racers always have to be concerned about a marshall being around to slap you with a penalty fro a situation your can’t avoid.

You won me over - Strike while the iron is hot - fliece the racers while you can…make them pay more …and give them less… damn the quality … .next year $1000 entry fee… 4000 entrants …and bring your own gatorade.

It’s what the people want.

Hey, we are not all rich… Prices are way too high!!! Why not considering doing other events? because the caliber is not high enough. I hate finish top 50 in a race that has only 200 peoples.

I personally think that 1500 athletes should be the maximum in theses races…

Break down like this…
1000 spots Qualifying through races (Half-Ironman)
500 spots in a lottery for people that didn’t qualify but did at least one qualifying race (no extra charge for putting your name in this lottery, it would be automatically let’s say if you mention that you want to qualify race for IMLP or other IM)

Many races of this kind of system (Boston Marathon, NYC Marathon, etc). Why not the same for IM (except Kona)?

I’m lucky to be a fair good swimmer and only get beaten up for a few buoys but for many this can last the whole swim section… even if the organization of the race is great! This is not fun for many.

Also, I’m not a great cyclist and when a see packs of 20,30 and 50+ going by me. So what’s the point of doing the swim…

So quality races doesn’t only mean great organization but also fair race. I don’t care if there’s 200 aids station, but if there’s 10 packs of 50 riders together that’s simply not acceptable for me.

Yes, I’m for reducing the number of athletes in the race but not for getting fees up!
Alex

People are already paying 1000$ through the community entries…and believe it or not that have them sold-out 150 spots in almost their races!!!
