24 hrs of triathlon, what´s the deal?

Did anyone see this? www.24hoursoftriathlon.com

Do a sprint triathlon (sort of) over and over as many times you can muster during 24 hours! Seemed like a really cool idea until I got to the part of “no night swimming, no swimming from 6.30 pm to 6.30 AM following morning” and as far I can see you need to do entire triathlons and can´t just do bike-runs during the night and than add the missing swims in the morning…

So what am I missing here? Do a 24 hr triathlon but really only 12 hrs?

I had the same reaction when I first heard of this. It’s right around the corner from me (it’s in Boulder, I live in the Denver area). It’s not really a 24 hour race per se; just a race to see how many sprints you can pull off the in the 24 hour period, with the caveat being you can’t swim at night. I understand it to mean that you have to complete the triathlons in proper sequence as well. Doesn’t make that much sense to me, and I don’t really see it as being that much fun – especially since the bike legs are (partially) on dirt.

Aha.

I can see the point of not wanting anyone go missing during the swim at night but why not make a “night swimcourse” close to shore with spotlights, multiple laps?

But not being able to actually go the 24 hrs (for those so inclined) sort of takes away the whole idea…

Seemed like a cool idea at first sight…

That is just f’n stupid!

Exactly. I tend to think this years race is going to be more of a testing ground to gauge interest in the concept. I can only imagine staffing a 24 hour triathlon is a nightmare. I’m thinking spotlights, small laps, volunteers (most likely more volunteers than necessary for liability reasons) who need to be fed throughout the night, supervision on the bike and run courses…it just all adds up to quite a bit of a logistical nightmare. I think it would be a blast to do if you could actually attempt to do the S, B and R throughout the night. Here’s hoping they figure out a way to do it.

Otherwise, it seems to be something like the Triple T concept, but just with Sprints instead of progressively longer distances.

But not being able to actually go the 24 hrs (for those so inclined) sort of takes away the whole idea…

Read the rules. You can go 24 hours, but you swim more laps in the daytime to equalize to your bike/run night laps

My understanding (from someone who registered) is that you have to do an equal number of s-b-r’s in order for that “lap” to count. So, you will have to either pre-swim or post-swim for the all night bike and runs. Of course take that information for what it is, secondhand…

Well, these are problems that all organizers of ultramarathons face. There are several double-, triple and ten (deca) Ironmans in the world. They swim in a pool however and do the swim in a fell sweep but bike and run is on smaller laps but obviously in the dark. But I guess with lamps on the bike and on the helmet it shouldn´t be too hard, in all relativeness… Kind of like RAAM

no, you can do extra swims in the daytime, then b/r only at night. you have to do the first full set of s/b/r at the start, then you can mix it up. caveat is that your finish amount is based on the total number of s/b/r’s you do. (also, you cannot double up the b or r)

sooo, for example, if you wanted to do 12 sets, you could do s/b/r/s/s/b/s/s/r/s/s/b/s/s prior to 630p. then do r/b/r/b/r/b/r/b/r/b/r/b/r at night until 630a. then do s/b/r/s/b/r/s/b/r before noon.

i think it is a really cool idea, but with it being at altitude, i’d never be able to do it

My bad.

I misunderstood the first part of the rules…

So then it IS a really cool race!

Yes it will be interesting to see how it goes this year
.

Jonas,

The best thing about this race is that its much better to be a swimmer for one of these. Poor swimmers are going to have a real hard time once they get tired (and possibly drown). Wetsuit logistics would be interesting too (I did not look at swim temps but putting a wetsuit on a sweaty body is never fun). I did not like the dirt road part - would people ride road bikes?

If each 0.5-17-4 takes a fast guy about 1:30 - then 16 loops = 8 miles of swimming (ouch!). Even at 2 hour pace = 6 miles of swimming, 204 cycling, and 48 running = OUCH, OUCH, OUCH.

Its interesting. A bunch of my friends are doing 24 hrs of Moab (mountain bike race) in October. This sounds WAY more fun.
