Wout… disappointing. Hopefully he can find some form over the next week or so. Seems unlikely he’ll battle for ciclamino, so stages later it is, maybe supporting Kooij?
Rog establishing himself as the guy, work to do for Ayuso et al.

Standard monthly Max is $16.99.
Wow, what a nailbiter - I was hoping Mads could hang on to pink. Nice rides by Roglic and especially Tarling!
Can Lidl/Trek bring Mads to a sprint tomorrow to get him back into pink? I can’t imagine that Bora really wants to keep the jersey.
@echappist - i don’t know if this is helpful, but here goes. We got new phones last year and upgraded some seriously old school grandfather type plan and internet speed to a verizon package that has max/hbo with ads (with netflix) for $10/month. that plan must have had hbo mid level plan that ended in March. I didn’t miss the racing enough until GIRO, so I checked out how to get mid level hbo/max - it costs us an additional $11 month. I’ll prob opt back out in June.
the sports level plan that gets you cycling seems to be mid level (of 3) - but NOT lowest/basic level.
Primo has an early 2000s Avril Lavigne / Avenged Sevenfold emo cut going on that is cracking me up.
yes - tomorrow will be interesting. For sure Lil T will want to get Mads (or Vacek) a shot at jersey and I’d also guess Primoz has NO PROBLEM loaning it out for a bit, but…me thinks UAE could let Vine set pace to drop Mads to force red bull to defend??? is Mads so crazy he’d go for the break to get red bull sprint and try to get ahead to survive climb??
Primo looks happy, relaxed and super dialed in from the hair on down.
More slugfests w Ayuso upcoming.
Thanks @McNulty and @fredericknorton!
$17/month isnt too bad overall. It wasnt clear from the splash page how much add’l coverage i needed to buy.
just wish I had timed it, as there’s a Disney/HBO combo I could take advantage of.
I think my new cycling habit will be Flo from late Feb. to late April; Max for the Giro; and Flo for Worlds. Peacock is on constant churn in the background, as I watch a lot of EPL soccer, and it’s ~$25 per 6-month renewal.
Significant paring back compared to before, but I think I can still get most of the races.
Bravo - Housewives, Below Deck, etc.
I’m also in the market for the Max subscription, what is the Disney/HBO deal?
That was a nail biter. Was really hoping Mads would get a day in pink on the road. Tomorrow’s climb looks like it could be a touch much for him but there is 20k to try and chase back on if close.
$17/month for the entry level, $30/month for entry level without ads.
I’m not sure if the sport add-on could be purchased though when one utilizes the $17/month deal for Disney, Hulu, and Max.
I’m really wondering about Mads in the break tomorrow - if he goes, if he’s allowed. If he has a head start at the foot of that climb, it looks a lot better for him contesting the win and going back into pink.
If you’ve got an American Express card, check the ‘special offers’ section of your account. There’s often a coupon for $30-40 off an annual MAX subscription. (Capitol One and Chase may have similar, but I’m not with their shopping portals) AmEx will also often have a coupon for Peacock that you might get lucky and get it to align with the TdF through Men’s Vuelta time frame.
I like the Italian Marco Frigo. Even though still in Albania, stage 3 may suit him. I’d think he’d save truly slaughtering himself for the ‘home crowd’ but if he’s allowed to go up the road on a break? Not playing pick 'em, just throwing it out there.
my thought on Mads and break: UAE won’t let him. I would NOT want to be on UAE having to chase a determined Mads trying to get in a break. maybe Lil T throws Vacek at break too?
I do think Mads can be pretty close over the climb and if Ciccone is sitting pretty in front group - maybe Vacek can be Mads’s wing man for the chase.
It looks like making front group tomorrow means 2-3 more days in pink.
Very darn unlikely. It’s not even the chance of getting pink that will lead to teams chasing him down, it’s the points. He’s one of the favorites in that competition, and he’ll be wearing the jersey. You can’t let that go up the road this early in the race.
I think tomorrow is one for the break (which I agree, Mads not likely allowed). Is Red bull really going to work all day to keep Primo in pink if there aren’t any GC threats in he break? Is UAE really going to expend the energy to attack Primo, as unlikely as it seems that they’d drop him? Is Lil’T going to work for Mads, given the difficulty of that final climb?
Cue some Italian opportunists getting into the break: Scaroni, Vendrame, Frigo etc.
Highly doubt it. I don’t think Primoz wants to wear pink for 3 weeks.
It’s going to be an interesting stage. last climb is hard enough that the sprinters won’t make it (except Mads and maybe Wout) so it’ll be up to the GC teams and little Trek to chase anything that looks dangerous. Redbull will be fine with losing the jersey, but they need to be careful about letting someone like Mcnutty up the road.
Descent off the final climb is a full 20k long… Pidcock could make things interesting if it’s just a small group at the top and the GC/climbers group is small and isolated. Probably too long a run in to the finish to really make a downhill attack work, but we could see some mistakes get made on the descent, and he might want to push hard just to try and keep Mads off the back and try and win it in the sprint. That 5th on stage one makes me think he’s got good reason to favor his chances absent Mads/Wout.
