2024 Ironman World Championship slots-fall races

(replying to the thread)
And here we are, going from “watered down championships” to “OMG only 1 slot per AG it’s impossible to qualify”.

Jokes aside, I can’t wait for the situation to have somewhat normalised into a predictable WC system (whatever that system will be, including rotating championship/s)

I’m actually OK with the number of new slots. I won’t go to Kona in 2024 because I’m not good enough. I only wished it’d have been more transparent and that we didn’t have a backlog of already registered carry-overs. I’ll do some math and post a bit later about the overall distribution of slots between men & women and between 2023 and 2024 races etc.

does anyone know which is the cost of IM WC 2024 slot?

some qualifying events have already taken place, but no idea about rolldown / price.

I was at IMMT on Sun and I don’t think many (if any) spots rolled for the men. And it looked like any woman who wants to go to Kona this year got the ticket

I think I heard $1000 at Kalmar last weekend but don’t quote me on that. They were hard to understand in the auditorium and I’m not sure if that was the 2023 women or 2024 men.

The gender split in Kona is still incredibly stupid. They had 75 women’s slots for Kona 2023, and a bunch of them didn’t even get taken, not even after roll down. They’re having trouble filling the pier.

F = Kona 2023
M = Kona 2024
AG | Available| Taken
18-24 f?, 1. m1, 1
25-29 f17, 2. m2, 2
30-34 f?, 3. m2, 2
35-39 f11, 4. m2, 2
40-44 f15, 9. m3, 3
45-49 f15, 11. m3, 3
50-54 f11, 4. m3, 3
55-59 f7, 6. m2, 2
60-64 f2, 3. m1, 1
65-69 f-. m1, 1
70-74 f-. m1, 0
75-79 f-. m-

Men 25-29 had 1, and 45-49 2 slots that went to anyone left in the room in that AG.

Also note: I know there were at least two older female athletes (73 and 77). But they were scanning QR codes on wristbands as you entered the rolldown auditorium. So those AG might have had a slot or 2 that auto-rolled due to none of those athletes showing up. I didn’t hear any verbal info on them, they just started at 60-64.

Women’s slots for 2023 were $1400 (US dollars) pre tax/fees, so I would guess 2024 for men’s slots would be a similar cost.

If they were listening to us it would be back under 1K as it was a couple years ago. The increases have been way over the general rate of inflation. My guess is their costs in Hawaii have gone way up vs inflation and they can’t afford to go back to under 1K, so listening to us doesn’t factor in.

I am sure, that for men is not a problem

But for women, i am curious to see how will go the slot allocation for women 2024 wc in Nize

(Replying in general to the thread)

Now that Maryland is done, does anyone have a slot allocation? I suspect it’s 2 slots, maaayybbe 3 slots for the big AG’s on the men’s side?

Pretty sure 2 was the max for any male AG for IM MD. I finished 3rd and got the 2nd slot for M45-49. If a slot rolled, it didn’t roll far.

Thanks, and congrats on the KQ!

Maybe last minute Ironman can send out some male invites to fill out the age groups. I imagine a dedicated male legacy wave 30minutes after the last female wave has departed could fill out those numbers pretty quick.
ps, Mr Messick, if you need a consultant, let me know.

Since Ironman does not have a venture capitalist to fund the salaries of those overpaid pros like PTO does and Ironman DOES have a sustainable biz model under which we age groupers pay, they just need to charge us more for all those pro paycheques.

The pink above is optional, but no one is forcing us to enter Ironman events. Realistically the hotels, airlines, rental car companies, and restaurants make more money than Ironman, but Ironman ends up being the whipping boy for us all, when in reality, we can all go to Hawaii on any weekend and pay the airlines, hotels, restaurants, and rental car companies non jacked up prices and do the self supported 140.6 routine.

So what do you say…we all show up to the Island and do our own self supported event and convince our fellow age grouper drones to not pay Messick’s staff and boycott the Mdot organized party? Will you guys show up to our self supported party, or do you want to pay Ironman for a coordinated party?

Dev,

I am in, but let’s do it on Maui, it’s a much better place to ride! We could do the West Maui loop and then up the Haleakala climb and then back down to Paia. The run could be to Hana.

That sounds like an awesome course!
(where are we swimming?)

Big beach is about a mile long so we could swim out 0.2 of a mile, then out and back along the shoreline to get in the swim.
