2024 70.3 Worlds in Taupo - predictions and race day

Maybe there is a correlation between seeing people cross the finish line or about to do something exciting with gullibility into being influenced by advertisements.

“WHAT ARE THEY DOING, WHY ARE THEY GOING TO A BREAK NOW…you know those hyperice things look good”

Exactly. It’s not uncommon to do interviews during events (Baseball for example) but when some type of action happens you interrupt the interview to do a play by play. Then go back to the interview.

We all think Matthew’s is great. It’s not about her it’s about the announcers not breaking into the interview to do a play by play of the ‘Maurten Move’ of the day.

But are they aero?

Surprise of the day - Harry Palmer. What a year for that Bath training group….

Was thinking the same thing… he’s coached by Rob Cheetham now, right? Along with Leon Chevalier…

I looked at the finish line camera, Hayden was carried off by two people (medical?) just before Leo finished. Hope he’s ok

I guess ‘production’ was told that this was going to be a procession with Wilde a minute ahead of second so they slotted that Matthews interview in. But as it strated it was clear that Geens was hunting Wilde down.
Yes, drop the interview and cover the most exciting 10 minutes of the race.
Tbf the Paris Olympic coverage similarly missed Yee’s move in the final km until it was almost done.

Would love to see them hire the guys from ProTri news for world championship race commentary. Nothing worse than a commentator who can’t identify an athlete on camera or consistently says a name wrong. In order to elevate the sport, we need commentary that gives the stats, insight and helps paint a picture of how hard these guys/girls are pushing it.

Not once on the bike did I hear them talk about how fast they are moving, how much power they are likely pushing or anything similar to that matter.

The constant ad breaks on top of it….awful.

None the less, hell of a race. Geens with a strategic masterclass.

Last note, I wonder if Lionel is sitting at home kicking himself as he dominated Geens in Oceanside this past year. Makes me wonder if he now wishes he had stayed the course with Jan.

I was in the car yesterday for most of the women’s race and so was more listening to the coverage than watching it. It made me realize how little coverage there is of the actual action of the race. I knew Taylor was in the lead but not much else. I kept asking my wife to read off the tracker.

Between the T100 and IM Pro Series we get to watch the best in the world go head to head a lot, and I’m grateful for that. But sometimes it feels like you need the endurance of an Ironman to watch an IM broadcast.

Jelle Geens was completely new to 70.3 at Oceanside. He had just received his first ever TTbike not long before. The Ridley bike is not really that good (apparently their previous WT-team complained about the TTbike a lot).

I love Lionel, but you are very wrong about Geens’ performance and capabilities when emphasizing Oceanside.

Ffsake. Lionel would not have dominated this race. Geens Oceanside was a completely different athlete, that race was done off his Olympic training, was one of/or his first long races. He has learnt about pacing, nutrition, and all that is different to short course. He has come a very long way since that time.

It was only a matter of time before people started saying that Lionel would have probably won based on comparisons to the first hit out race of the year…8 months ago.
Yep…totally the same thing.

Never did I say Lionel would win. I personally don’t think he’d stand a chance. I simply said I wonder if HE is at home questioning things due to the performance he had in Oceanside vs Geenes.

i am noticing this, in all sports. successful athletes turn to social media, then it ends up being their downward spiral

Geens is now the MAN at MD!! Cant wait to see him line up against the Norwegians.

Henri let me down taking it easy on the swim, Wilde never blowing up on the run!

Why did they only have the top 2 on the tracker as though the whole field have DNFd and why on earth go to two ad breaks in the space of 5 mins when athletes are crossing the line? Shocking coverage!

.
Not that Ari (or anyone here) will care but he lost me after his total bitchfest at getting DQ’ed after “winning” a small town Tri last month.

I also find the guy insufferable when he runs his mouth. Don’t really understand the economics of someone his level signing up for his race, he is maybe a third tier pro on a good day (being generous here), why race a bunch of second and first tier pros? Sponsors?

Also, what is going on with Jason West? He is having a horrible season.

He had the third fastest run.
But yes, when you think how 2023 went, I am disappointed he didn’t carry that momentum through.
I guess someone can help us understand the issues.
And for 2025: some North American 70.3s?
