2023 Competition Rules Released
Dear GMAN,
We hope your year is off to a great start and your preparations are going well for your upcoming 2023 event! As we kick off the season, we are happy to inform you that our 2023 Competition Rules are now available. The 2023 Competition Rules can be viewed here and will be effective March 1, 2023 for all events globally. As you are a registered athlete, we wanted to highlight a few of the changes for this year.
Physically Challenged/Intellectual Disability (PC/ID) Open Division
New for 2023, the PC Open/Exhibition division has been expanded to include athletes with an intellectual disability, creating the Physically Challenged/Intellectual Disability (PC/ID) Open division. This newly modified participatory division includes PC Open athletes, Special teams and ID Open athletes. Athletes in the PC/ID Open division will also be eligible for the PC/ID Open World Championship Drawing for slots to compete in the IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship events.
Open division
We are also introducing a new Open division, which has been created to expand inclusion opportunities, and welcomes participation from any and all able-bodied athletes who wish to race in an event without a gender or age-based peer comparison. The Open division will be available at IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlon Series events as of March 1 (excluding IRONMAN World Championship and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship Events). With no approval process necessary for participation in the Open division, athletes may self-select to register for this division during the online event registration process, instead of their Age Group category.
Any athlete that is currently registered as an Age Group athlete may change to the Open division ahead of race week by emailing the race specific email to request a change, or may change to the Open division during the onsite Athlete Check-In process at their upcoming event. Athletes in the Open division are still subject to all Competition Rules and, as a non-competitive division, are not eligible for IRONMAN or IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship qualifying slots. More information can be found in the Open Division FAQs.
Other updates
Maintaining our alliance with World Triathlon Competition Rules, IRONMAN will align with World Triathlon’s policies for Transgender Athletes. Our updated IRONMAN Transgender Policy and FAQs can be found here and will be effective March 1, 2023. We have also made updates to Run Conduct, Section 6.02 of the IRONMAN Competition Rules, regarding approved running shoes for all IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events.
Please familiarize yourself with the 2023 Competition Rules in advance of your upcoming event. Should you have any questions, direct them to your corresponding event’s contact email.
We look forward to seeing you at the starting line this year and can’t wait to call you across the finish line!
