I am shopping around for a triathlon bike. Yesterday I saw someone with a new aero bike with aero bars and seat post and got me thinking. Most the tri bikes I am looking at are older bikes around 09-2013. How much faster are those old tri bikes compared to the new age Aero road bikes. I know there is no data out there but just looking for peoples opinions.
Depending on the bike, considerably.
The two main Tri bikes I am looking at are cannondale slice, P2’s or if there is a deal on a bike that I can not pass of.
Aero bikes
SystemSix
BMC
Giant
Canyon
They are my main ones
Not sure if this information will help.
What’s your budget?
Some of the bikes in that 09-13 range are plenty fast, I thinkt the “new P2/P3” came out in 2013 if I am not mistaken…
If you haven’t read the “Wind Tunnel Shootout”, may help answer your question of “how much faster”. Even some of the “new” aero bikes are considerably slower than their competition, and an older Felt held its own. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8RrY_TRtezdc2pYSHJ1cVllUjQ/view
Your body, your fit on the bike is going to make more drag than any bike. Consider the bike fit as very important.
Ill take a look at that! Thank you
My budget is dependable to be honest. I was thinking of getting a bike that is jack of all trades or keep my road bike and get a tri bike.
I know it all depends on fit and a lot about me. The person is biggest problem with aero haha.
I was just woundering if the new bikes could be faster then old tri bikes haha. Aero bikes came such a long ways the last few years.
The problem is can you get in a good stable position in a tri position on a road bike. Since the top tube is shorter and headtube higher you probably can’t get in a good tri position on most road bikes.
I’m sure some of the new bikes are faster. But position wise is where you’ll have the issue.

Haven’t many of the new bikes gravitated towards a more relaxed fit than the older ones? If you can tolerate a more aggressive position a lot of older tri bikes are more aero when looking at both the bike and rider as a whole.
Very interested in this question as well. I ride a 2007 P2 (alum. frame) and am considering if there is a gain if I updated to a new 2019 frame.
I don’t think so, an 07 cervelo soloist carbon is about as good as an aero road bike can be. New stuff looks cool because guys at the marketing department are good, but time a soloist carbon versus latest crazy aero road bike, if you have the right fit and kit (fit, clothing, wheels are all much more important than frame shaping) with some nice deep wheels, both bike will test super close.
So stop dreaming on the last marketing campaign and buy the good stuff. If you want to go fast, don’t do much drafting racing and don’t care about climbing that much it’s Time Trial bike. Fit comfort and maneuvrability will be better by a good margin compared to tweaked road bike. Also if you care about climbing some time trial bike aren’t that heavy, just check before you buy. By contrast if you care much about how other rider perceive you than buy latest bling kit.
