2012 vs 2011 P4 - nothing actually new?

On the Cervelo site, they say the 2012 P4 has “25 new improvements”… de ja vu! aren’t these the same “25 improvements” as the 2011 bike? or did they just improve the same things again (as discussed here)

from their site:
While outlandish claims fly in the world of “superbikes”, the quiet redesign of the P4 keeps it firmly atop the ranks for the ultimate in TT/Tri bike design. 25 upgrades including a better IBT rear brake, ICS3 cable routing, more secure seatpost clamping and improved downtube & seattube shapes help it to remain the fastest in our latest test of all the newest TT/Tri bikes. Faster than ever while easier to set-up and maintain, a golden combination

I’m not even sure if there is going to be a 2012 p4. I think the site may just be pseudoupdated until thye come out with their new bike next spring.

Cervelo is just trying to get rid of all the P4’s they have. They didn’t make 25 new improvements for 2012. They just changed the date on their website. Pretty shady if you ask me.

I was thinking it was shady to market the P4 as a 2012 at all, with the P5 planned to be released in Jan/Feb. Leave them as 2011 old stock sold at a discount.

Yes, that would have been the moral thing to do, but I guess they want to make as much as they can off them to help pay for the R&D for the 2012 PX.?.?.?.?

Moral, its just selling bikes.

So, lying and saying a 2011 bike is a 2012 with 25 new upgrades that didn’t actually take place for 2012 is moral? I don’t think so!

I doubt they were trying to do anything fishy, if you are the market for an expensive Tri bike, I would hope you are smart enough to know the P4 hasn’t changed and you would do some due diligence first before purchasing. Cervelo has awesome bikes and I was seriously considering that new PX, but I went a different direction. Whats up with the way they market their new bikes? They just tease us with some lame photos of a mule bike and then say we’ll get pictures in Dec. and the bike will ship in Jan. or Feb. 2012. If I could have seen some pictures of the bike, there would have been a good chance I would have purchased the bike. Why is everything such a secret…wouldn’t you want to hype up the new bike and get some excitement going?

Welcome to Cervelo…
.

Cervelo has had very good bikes and very fast bikes for awhile and because of that they have been able to sell themselves, so their marketing has never had to be amazing. Now you have some heavy hitters with trek/specialized that know how to market and now have damn fast bikes and I think Cervelo is going to start taking a hit because of it at some point. If you look at what specialized did at Ironman Hawaii it was pure marketing gold, even if Alexander didn’t win they still had everyone out in force there with the best athletes in the sport being able to see what they are offering now. When you get the top age groupers switched over then you are going to see a shift from Cervelo, due to people at racing seeing more and more faster age groupers riding those bikes. If I was sponsored by a bike store that had specialized instead of Trek/Cervelo/Giant I probably would be on the nosecone shiv instead of the p4. Right now I don’t see any big reason to bike Cervelo, all 5 or 6 bikes at the top are pretty much equal as long as you fit on them. I’d never fit on a Trek.

Yeah, I don’t understand all the secrecy behind the new bike either. Now is the time when people are buying. It’s not like some company is going to see the bike and steal the design and get a bike out before Cervelo. Just dumb and poor marketing. It’s not wise to just assume all the people currently on Cervelo are going to buy the new one.

I agree with you on Cervelo starting to take a hit a little, but why not just get some hype going a little bit…anyone can do that…it doesn’t take a marketing guru to do that with their new PX/P5. Get some spy photos out there! I ended up going with a Trek - SC/Project One. Specialized have nice bikes too, but I just couldn’t get my heart set on their new Shiv and i wasn’t that impressed with the bladder system in the frame and didn’t like the look. The coolest thing about the trek is the ability to customize it more than the other major players and the fit has some good options. Plus its hand built in the Wisconsin, which is cool. Better than China.

Grant, how long have you had a P4? Are you happy with it or are you leaning toward a nosecone Shiv?

dude you need medication.

slow day for things to get upset about, so you had to manufacture a controversy about the cervelo website?

should they not be allowed to talk about the improvements they made to the p4 once those improvements are over a year old?

Well, if it implies that it’s an improvement over 2011 then it’s not cool, right?

I think it’s somewhat ambiguous though.

Absolutely, but not pass them off as 2012 improvments. It’s a 2011 bike with 2011 improvements and should be marketed as such.

I had a p3 basically since they came out and was debating between a p4/shiv. I ended up getting a 2009 actually not from my sponsors store because they couldn’t get them in but from a store in Missouri since they had one on super closeout because they were switching their main inventory from cervelo to specialized.

I’m happy with it now, I was very not happy with the seat post issue that everyone had. However that seems to be fixed with the 2011 model cervelo sent me for free and that was my only issue with the bike. The cable routing is significantly better on the 2011 compared to the 2009 but I had that pretty well down after having to do it on an S3 so it wasn’t a big deal for me. I use the waterbottle as a spare holder which works great and just run the horzontal between the bars since that is really all I need for fluid. I rarely go through half a bottle during an olympic tri, so i’m fine without needing the built in bottle. As far as ride, it rides well like a bike, its more comfortable than the p3 by far, but not nearly as nice as the s3, which was unreal.

So at the end of the day its a bike, it goes fast and rides as well as I need it to so I’m perfectly content with it. I’ll take a look at the p5 but it would have to be pretty drastic for me to switch already I’ll probably wait till the next gen of bikes come out. Especially considering specialized even showed their new shiv isn’t that much much better than the nosecone one which right in the ball park of the p4.

Medication? I know you ride a Cervelo, so of course you’re going to be somewhat biased, but there wasn’t anything crazy about that post. I guarantee Cervelo is doing quite a bit of banking/counting on current Cervelo owners buying the new Cervelo instead of marketing to potential Cervelo owners.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply. Glad you’re happy and have people taking care of you. I wish you the best of luck in all you do.

Again, thanks for taking the time. Very appreciated.
