2012 SRAM Red Cassette vs 2012 Shimano DA 7900 Cassette

Im torn between the SRAM Red cassette vs Shimano Dura Ace cassette. SRAM is slightly lighter and $20 cheaper on Bikewagon BUT is it as smooth as the DA?

Setup: Full Shimano DA Di2 drivetrain

weight differences of these magnitudes do not matter. So with the shimano cassette.

Okay, here is a newbie question. Can you use SRAM on a Shimano drivetrain and vice versa?

I always though thought you had to use like components.

Yes you can. Shimano is generally quieter and smoother shifting.

Great, thank you. I am looking for a 12-28 cassette and cannot find a Shimano cassette with this combo, but I heard SRAM offers this combo.

I will give it a go.

but the SRAM sounds sooo awesome when you shift, especially with a disc wheel…

The new RED is probably on par with DA. Old Red is noiser are slightly worse shifting. Both reds should last longer as the cassettes are steel vs steel and ti.

Generally I’d just go cheapest between new RED and DA if both are available in the size I want.

This is good information. Thank you!

Good comments all around …
I would add that whatever you choose … DA or SRAM … You stick with that brand.
Depending on your grouppo, it’s a pain to have to adjust the rear der each time you swap out wheels … If you are using both shimano and SRAM cassettes … ESP with a SRAM Grouppo.

All new Red on my bike and still did not like the cassette :-(. The noise just drove me nuts and shifting was not that smooth. DA 7900 for me or just plain PG-1070. Also I prefer KMC X-10SL chain with SRAM Red gruppo (older and new) and either of the mentioned no SRAM cassettes.
