I think this question may have been asked and answered before, but I ran a search and can’t find it. My question is simply, with the 2012 model year, the S5 was offered in three versions: (1) base model, (2) Team and (3) VWD. For 2013, it is down to two models: (1) base model and (2) VWD… paint job aside, is the 2012 Team the same as the 2013 base model? If not, what are the differences?
The team weight a littles less then the regular S5.
The team weight a littles less then the regular S5.
I know the difference between the 2012 models - the Team weighs about 200g less than the base model and the VWD weighs 70-100g less than the Team. IIRC. I’m not sure whether your response is shorthand for the foregoing or if you are saying that the 2012 Team weighs less than the 2013 base model. If the latter, do you have a source for this info?
Yes.
We are gradually dropping the “base, Team, VWD” nomenclature, largely because of the confusion we’ve caused by it.
To be clear:
The current S5 frame is technologically the same as the S5 Team.
The current R3 frame is technologically the same as the R3 Team.
etc.
Basically, the current models have generally dropped the suffixes but kept the technical upgrades of previous years’ suffix-named models.
There is one exception: the S5 VWD has always been the same year-to-year and is completely different from the S5 base or S5 Team, so we’ve always kept the VWD name on it throughout.
Cheers,
So…what you’re saying is, I have a 1 year only special edition model? Cool
Same for me
It may have more value than a new 2013 S5 now (one can dream).
The team weight a littles less then the regular S5.
The 2013 S5 frame stripped down with no metal parts except the seatpost clamp and derailleur hanger was 1356g on my gram scale.
I think the 2012 S5 Team frame was advertised at 1240g.
"Cervelo’s service rep David Byers, who provide the weights listed here, is quick to point that they don’t claim exact weights due to the nature of composites. All frames are going to have variances, so these weights are all “ballpark”.
“The 2012 base frame is claimed at around 1,300g. The Team frame comes in around 60g lighter. The VWD uses some of the gram chopping lessons learned developing the Project California R5 and sheds about 270g from the Team S5 frameset, putting it under 1,000g (claimed)…”

size 54? I believe that was their reference size.

No, this is a 56cm.

Perhaps Damon can reply, but either their quality control has gone bad or they are painting last years base model and and saying that it is the 2013 and the same as the team from last year.
Mine is not and I am not happy. My brand new 2013 S5 frame 54cm with only hangers came in at a portly 1420 grams, that is well over the 1260 claimed on last years team edition which this years base model is supposed to be, to go one further my uncut fork came in at 398 or 40 grams heavier than last years team edition. My guess is I have a 2012 base model painted in this years colors for 3800 dollars I am a very unhappy customer paying more for the extra half pound!!!
I paid more for .467 pounds, that’s dumb! Hope that Damon can comment!
“to go one further my uncut fork came in at 398 or 40 grams heavier than last years team edition.”
personally, i would be scared if an uncut fork weighed much less than 400g.
Carbon bikes can have a lot of variance in weight during production. There are threads on here about this being observed with the Venge as well, where many McLaren Venge bikes were actually heavier than their regular counterparts!
The base model from 2012 was supposed to be around 1,260g and team model 1,200 grams. That was in size 54 “with all hardware” so I wouldn’t jump to assume you got a base model repainted.
Could be your scale is wrong, the S5 just plain got heavier in 2013, you got unlucky and got a heavy example. It happens. Weight weenies will typically weight each frame at the store and pick the light one!
I wonder, if you were inclined, if you could cut/grind away excess bits on the inside of the frame, if that was causing the extra weight?

JMott, this years base is suppose to be last years team. Cervelo told me that it is suppose to weigh between 1200-1300 for frame with bb installed and hangers installed. So 240 to 140 over seems offly high to me. That’s a wide variance, also last years s5 base was suppose to weigh 1400 in a 54, mine is spot on with this weight. I got hosed for 400 bucks… Also did not get a chance to weigh it, the store had to order it. Not the best cervelo dealer in the world that for sure. But cervelo should stand behind this, half a pound is crazy…

Huh? That might be your issue right there. I’m pretty sure those frame weights were WITHOUT a BB pressed in there. That’s ~100g right there…

I know.

I agree, why aren’t you calling them, or your dealer, and see if they will swap frames for you? If the shops’ scale, or Cervelo’s verifies yours, it would seem reasonable.
Enve are probably the most specced high end forks out there and they weigh from 300-350 uncut. They certainly feel scary light especially when you remove a steel fork and replace it with an Enve, but I can’t remember hearing about a single failure although I’m sure someone will post one.
JMott, I called they are suppose to get back to me. Hoping Damon sees this thread.
My cervelo dealer is kind of useless. When my wife’s 2011 r3 popped a rivet they had me buy the gun… Stand up bike shop especially since 11 r3s had an issue with alu rivets and changed to steel mid year. My scale could be off, but seatpost was dead on claimed weight and every other component was within 15 grams, that goes for tubies and everything else. If I don’t hear from them I will call again.
Tom A pf bb/ bbright ceramic weigh around 48 grams and was told included in 54cm frame weight.
my 54cm 2013 S5 weigh in 1300g with hanger and bb installed and 371g fork

Uncut fork for my size 56 RCA was 316gm…just sayin’
