Does any one know when Hed adopted the “SCT” fairing design?
I have a front '10 Hed Jet 60’s with the C2 rim and older style hub. I don’t like riding with it because it blows me around too much in crosswinds.
I just purchased a '12 Jet 50 and it is much more stable in crosswinds (better than even a zipp 303 firecrest) yet still “feels” as fast as the 60.
However with Tony Martin recently kicking ass on the Hed Jet 60 clincher, I wonder if there was a difference between 2010 and 2012. And if the 2012/13 model is more stable in crosswinds.
If so the 60 might have been a better option… (it is also lighter than the 50).
SCT came out in 2011. I don’t have the old HED data, but the “firecrest” type shapes test faster than the older toroidals (the new 404s beat the old 808s), so I’d bet the 50mm SCT is faster than the old 60mm.
The new shapes are also much better in crosswinds…I’m guessing you’d be fine with the 60mm.
We brought the Stinger SCT shaping into the Jets late 2011 in a 3k or 1k carbon version. For 2012 the carbon changed to a uni-carbon to take weight down even more. Yes, they will be more stable than the 2010 versions of the Jets.
Tony won the TT in the 2011 Tour de France on the current 2012-2013 Jet 6. Standard stock build.
The differences between the current Jet 6 and the Jet 5 are the Jet 6 front wheel is built with the carbon centered hub, a lighter bladed spoke, and scandium C2 front rim. The Jet 5 is on a thicker bladed spoke, alloy hub, and standard Hed C2 alloy rim. Both are fast! -Ian
Thanks for the confirmation. I tried the older 60 again in moderate winds and it definitely got blown around more.
Feeling the trailing edge of the carbon of that rim, it definitely feels “sharper” than the 50.
It’s remarkable how these subtle changes make a substantial difference.
