Can anyone give me a review about this group?
Well, it’s the bottom of the line. It will work, though. Of course, for the price of a tiagra bike locally you could buy online and get 105.
You know, I have a 9 speed Tiagra 2007 on a Schwinn Crossbike that I got just for shits and grins a couple of years ago, put a carbon fork on it to make the ride a little more plush and figured I would at some point upgrade the components if I really liked cross. Well, after a couple of thousand miles of abuse on dirt and limestone trails, that thing still shifts crisply and cleanly–requires less maintenance than my dura ace stuff. So, if it fits your budget, I’d say go for it.
My commuter has a mix of tiagra/sora (sora being the next step down), with tiagra RD/cassette. I definitely notice a difference shifting compared to my ultrega, but it’s really not that bad. It’s also pretty new - used enough for the cables to stretch, and I haven’t adjusted them yet, so that could be part of the problem.
In my opinion, tiagra is the worst of the good groupos. The 9 speed is also a big negative, but I notice it less on the road bike, because of my lack of a consistent position. If you were to put that on my tri bike, I would definitely notice the lack of a 16T ring on the cassette.
“The 9 speed is also a big negative”
Seriously? I still have 9sp on a couple bikes and I think it’s far from a “big” negative. I’m hard pressed to call it a negative at all.
It can be if you’re racing. We have a lot of big local races and neutral support typically only carries replacement wheels in 10-speed…
Tibbs won’t be road racing looking for neutral support so 9 wouldn’t be a negative for him. I have to agree, I don’t think 9 speed is a negative at all–I hardly notice the difference between my 9 and 10 speed bikes unless I want to swap wheels which would mean swapping cassettes as well.

Nice thing is it won’t seriously dent your wallet and it will not hold you back performance wise. However if you are consistantly missing the podium by mere seconds I’d say you could justify an upgrade. Then you can upgrade bits and pieces as you wear them out. Seems a lot less expensive if you buy replacement components over a 2-3 year period even though I know it’s not true. But it allows me to fly under the economic impact radar and maintain marital bliss (35 years June 29th)

I had Tiagra/Sora on my first road bike, a Felt F90. I loved that it had a thumb shift. In fact, Shimano almost lost me to Campy when I bought my new road bike, but I got an incredible deal on a Litespeed with Ultegra. I love it, but I do miss the thumb shift sometimes.
Can anyone give me a review about this group?
ive got some 8 speed sora on one of my bikes
works fine!
I just did some viscious offroading with it
on a road bike
nothing broke!
lots of MBers made fun of me though…lol
There is nothing wrong with Tiagra. You won’t be any slower with it over Ultegra or Dura Ace. I wouldn’t be scared of it one bit. Sometimes people spend too much time worrying about components.
