I got a call from a local TV Sports anchor last week. He told me that they were doing a feature on local runners and my name came up. Anyway, yesterday we met at the Y and they filmed away - me swimming, me biking, me running and a lengthy interview, etc… But, as I was getting my stuff together for the bike ride he hands me a certificate. At first I thought it was a letter of appreciating from Fox News… as I read further I realized it was from the World Triathlon Corporation. I’ve been selected to participate in the 2005 Ironman World Championships in Hawaii!!! Can you believe it? I entered the lottery last February but didn’t really believe that I could get in that way. I’m so excited!!! Next October 15 I’ll be participating in this incredible event with the best athletes in the world. ![]()
Congratulations and good luck.
Congrats - we’re all happy for you and a little jealous also!!
Train hard and enjoy the journey
Thanks so much… I’m so happy I can’t believe it. We’re going to Kona and I wish I could take everyone with us. ![]()
Do you think that if my local news hasn’t contacted me then i haven’t won a slot?
Did you have anything special on your lottery application (ie overcoming some hardship etc) or was it pure luck they chose to feature you?
Oh yeah, I’d say congrats but that’s one less NY slot available for me ![]()
I tried to be very careful about what I put on the application. Also, I guess they were impressed that I’ve done 6 marathons and 9 triathlons in the last 4 years. I’m so overjoyed… Now the local newspaper is trying to interview me.
When I won my slot it was presneted to me at a YMCA by the local TV crew. They told me that they were doing a story on training for Triathlon. Sounds very similar.

So is the suggestion that its not a lottery at all, but all hinges on what you said in the "what’s interesting about you " question ?

I believe he was explaining why they chose him among the regional lottery winners to feature in the news story. The lottery itself is random.
They are going to have to come up with a new ploy, at least for STers because the next time someone gets a call from the local news in April the suprise will be on the news when the person just says “I know, I am going to Kona” ![]()
Congrats and good luck!
Congrats that’s awesome, what a way to find out
