20 Meter Pool

My usual pool has closed for a year. They are building a new one. It was 25yards. Last night I swam at my work (south Campus) gym. The pool was 20 meters. I have no idea how far I swam. I used to use tiles on the deck to count my laps. The new pool has no tiles. It was weird. I had to swim 200s so I ended up at the same place I started each time. When I swam 200yards i would time out to about 3:05 for each one. In meters it was 3:49 each time.

Does any one else swim in odd length pools?

Erichollins and I swim in a 33 1/3 yard (100 feet) long pool. And yes, it makes it really hard to do something like a 75…

The first pool I swam in was a 20yd pool.

It was hard to do 50yd repeats in it

My coach at the time was going crazy about it cuz he couldn’t figure out why I was swimming my laps so fast, then he listened to me about the length of the pool.

Swim a few strokes then flip, few more strokes - flip, it was weird when I moved to a 25yd pool.

When I swim long now I normally count my 500’s - 20 lengths (10 laps) in a 25yd pool, that would be 25 lengths (12.5 laps) in a 20yd pool. I normally count laps.

I travel about 50% of my time traveling, to multiple cities, and most of the hotel pools I can find are odd lengths - the most common seems to be 15y or 15M. Absolutely infuriating to try to adjust a standard workout in 50’s, 100’s and 200’s to 60’s, 90’s and 210’s. Screws up timing as well, as you spend too much time pushing off; but still need to make a living, so need to travel

Last week, in London, was able to finish up within 10y of scheduled workouts - 2400 or 2700 - tho was in meters rather than yards, which fouled me up even more since my home pool has gotten me used to timing in 25 or 50y lengths. Sure beats lying in bed in the morning before a day of mind-numbing meetings, however!

A bit OT, but am curious how many others have substantial travel hurdles to deal with - with lots of transcontinental or international travel and consequent change in training venue and time zones - and how you deal with it.

My apartment has a 18 m “L” shaped pool. I’ve tried to remedy the shortness by swimming diagonally between the two furthest corners to squeeze out a little bit more distance. Considering its empty about 95% of the time, it’s pretty easy to do, with the added benefit of taking away lane lines.

I swim in a 20yd pool once or twice each week. You get used to it after a few swims. I just do weird sets like 10 x 120yd so I’m down and back 3 times. After you’ve done enough swimming at the odd length pool you get to be able to compare your times and efforts. Fortunately, I have access to a 25m pool as well and do most of my serious workouts there. I tend to use the 20yd pool for drill work.
