2 x 20 sweet spot

Hi
Can someone please explain what is meant by sweet spot.
I get the 2x20 bit as I do threshold rides on the computrainer at or above my FTP but confused about the sweet spot bit
Jonboy

Sweet spot is typically about 85% of FTP. Good bang for the buck, and doesn’t take as much out of you as the 2x20 intervals at/above FTP.

85% is a bit low

you can flippin do that for a couple of hours day afer day
.

Sweet spot training is between 88-93% of your FTP.

Thanks Nick
Will give that a try BTW how much rest between sets
.

The paper stated it was the “sweet spot” because it was repeatable. It was supposed to be the area where the return on investment was the highest when compared to the recovery time. As such you could probably repeat these workouts more often. Your gains will be smaller, but you will be able to do the work more often.

If you’re really doing “sweet spot” , then there should be no need to break it up into 20 minute intervals (you should be able to do it straight through) AND it should go longer…more like 90 minutes continuous.

If you can’t do that, then your FTP is overestimated.

2-5mins.

That’s a helluva workout. It might even fit into his training plan, depending on target TSS, other workouts, etc. But it doesn’t really answer the question, does it? What’s your definition of sweet spot? -J

sometimes a number is worth 25 words
.

The number was already given earlier. But sometimes people need tobrealize the workout they are looking at doing isn’t much of a stretch St all and won’t give them much adaptation.

The term means you’re working at the combination of intensity and duration where the session is enough that your body responds with increased fitness, but it’s still easy enough that you’re recovered in time for the next planned training session.

JO,
I agree it was given earlier, but that doesn’t mean that everyone agrees on it. I’ve heard sweetspot values range from 80-95% FTP. Best to simply state the #, no?
Second, I totally agree when it comes to understanding workout impact. But, isn’t that a discussion that requires some context? -J

“…between 83-85% to 97-100% of your FTP/MSS”

+1 on both that it’s not as tight a range as some have suggested and more of an intensity/training volume tradeoff concept and the reference to Frank Overton’s website as Frank is credited by Andy Coggan and others as coining the term SST regardless of how others have redefined it since.

88-93% of FTP. It’s the very top of your tempo zone and bottom of your threshold zone.

First of all, Are you a Walton? (from your username) and second, Thank You for the question. I JUST, (as in the last couple weeks) figure out I was supposed to be doing intervals on the bike all along and have been scrambling to add some in before IMCOZ. Too little, too late, I suspect but there is definitely next year. I have also been wondering about the sweet spot and thank you so much for asking.
