I’ve been training all year with one stupid race in mind. Now I’m two weeks out, and I can barely breathe. I have had allergies before, but nothing like this. My nose is raw and drippy and my lungs feel tight in the mornings (and also during workouts dammit).
I’ve tried the claritin, and it put me to sleep for about 16 hours. Been avoiding the pseudoephedrine as uppers freak me out. At any rate, I’m not sure that either of these addresses lung tightness.
Has anybody had luck with treating allergies to get back to training and racing, or do you just put a smile on your face and suck wind?
you may want to try an intranasal spray. That is the preferred method for treating allergies.
But if you are going with a pill, then you can do much better then clariton which is a rather weak antihistamine.
zyrtec is otc. Allegra and zxyal are Rx. Clarinex is weak since it’s the isomer of clariton.
If you wanted to get a 1st generation antihistamine there is benedryl which is otc. Though I prefer atarax.
To the sedation point. Claritin, clarinex, zyrtec and zxyal may cause sedation and Allegra is non sedating.
Neti pot as previously mentioned
and zyrtec is the best OTC allergy medication there is. I have singular prescribed but take zyrtec when I don’t have it.
Also surprised that Claritin makes you sleepy. In any event, try taking fish oil supplements (and build to the higher end dosage). It’s been proven to help some folks with allergies and is good for you anyway…
