1986 Sports Nutritional System Drink "Exceed" by Ross Laboratories-remember this?

You have a history in this sport if you can remember Exceed Sports Nutritional System drinks. Weider Nutritional Groups “purchased” Exceed early in 1994 and it disappeared from mainstream triathlon publications and usage.

I used to love that stuff. I liked the lemon-lime, or whatever it was, when it was as warm as piss.

Currently Advanced Nutrition makes a sports drink called Exceed. Does it have any connection to the original? I can only find it on Spanish language websites.

I do remember “Exceed” products, now that you’ve brought it back to my mind, hadn’t thought about “Exceed” in years. 1986 was my first year in triathlon so all the stuff from those first few years is pretty memorable:)

I raced for a regional-level road team that picked up Exceed Sports as a sponsor the year before it went mainstream which I guess made us ‘beta’ testers as we got a whole lot of product to try that year. In retrospect, I would say that when mixed per instructions on the package, it tasted only slightly better than the flavored fluid I had to consume as part of a bowel cleanse prior to undergoing a Colonoscopy a couple years back.

I used that stuff in the 80’s. If I recall correctly were they not the drink sponsor of Kona one year? Or was it Penticton?

I believe it was made by Ross labs in Columbus. I remember they used to pay for some of the research at OSU in the physiology lab. I guess it was a really good product, just too expensive to be competitive.

I remember they used E.R.G. In Kona in '82. In fact, they Tinley brothers complained about the taste on camera during the race.

They might have been but i can’t recall per se. I do recall Bud Light sponsoring the USTS series and i think they sponsored Kona a few yrs also. I used to drink Bud Light religiously because of that until one day i realized that i actually needed those extra 50 cal/bottle:)

Used to love the vanilla ready to drink, well except for the brutal gas aftermath
.

Yea, I remember exceed, gookinaid, pro-optibol, and G-push back in the day. Paul Thomas had an affiliation with G-push I think. One of the very few drinks that tasted better warm than cold, so it was great for many summer races.

I raced in Ohio in the 80s and 90s, so a fair number of races had Exceed. I remember thinking of it as a more serious version of Gatorade. Can’t say much for the taste though, and typically winced when I heard it was going to be on course.

There’s an old story about how they paid big $$$ to be the official sports drink for the NFL…only to learn that Gatorade still had the rights to the logo on the cups and coolers.

Anyone remember Glen Town who was featured in the 1986 Exceed publication? 24th at Kona in 1983. As for taste, I had no trouble with the orange flavored sports drink. Maybe this publication I have should be sent to the triathlon history site.

I starter racing in 88. I remember Exceed. Incredibly sticky if you spilled any!

No, it was Kona.

Semi team experimented with it on the summer of 86 or 87. The High Carb source drink was nasty. The other stuff wasnt back.

I remember being given a glass of that stuff to sip after going to the clinic w/ some GI bug as a freshman at the Air Force Academy. They gave me a canister of it to make my own for the next couple of days. It then became a post drinking/pre bed ritual for the rest of my time at USAFA.

I remember that as well. Mark and Dave side by side somewhere late in the run and Dave calling out for “Exceed” to the volunteers.

I do remember using the stuff in the late 80’s/early 90’s, but don’t remember the taste.

Since you mention Columbus and OSU, are you the J. Roden who put on a XC race on NY’s Day in the early 90s outside Newark? I think five of us ran. I got second, probably to you. Great fun. I still remember scrambling up a steep bank.

… i was four… thank you because i have been feeling old lately… this helped

They were the sponsor at the 1985 Kona. I remember getting so bloated on the bike and having to walk a lot going out of town.
