Ok, a lot of you know I am recovering from MCL and ACL surgery due to being shot through the knee over in Iraq.
Prior to this past September when I did my first triathlon, I have never really ran more than 6 miles at a time ever in my life. I’ve always been in good shape, but never a premier runner or even tried to be. I am training for my 4 races that I have planned and I’m just curious as to where I’m at.
I started running again after all the rehab and such on my knee in August. Last night I did a 15K in 59:54 and I’m wondering if this is decent for 6 months in to my training??? I know I’ll get better, just curious as to know if I should have been where I’m at sooner.
You probably don’t want to hear this but there is no “timetable” to tell you where you should be and when, particularly when rehabbing an injury. Getting shot in the knee is likely outside of the experience of 99.97% of the running/triathlon world. And words like “bad” “good” “great” – completely subjective. And relative to what?
Sounds to me like you are doing fine and getting faster. That’s the right track. Please don’t start worrying about a schedule of when you should be running what time. I don’t see any scenario where that can help you and many where it can hurt.
Hmmm intresting…
I’m also planning on doing my first IM with that sort of a run-split in mind.
I wonder though, if - for that goal - it really matters if you can squeeze one or two minutes more or less out of your 15K or even Halfmarathon performace, when for that 3:30 IM Marathon you’ll depend mostly on how much you’ve got left in the tank after the bike and how well you can then hold an 8 minute mile…
This table is a good place to start. Awesome to have goals, even better to achieve them. FWIW IM run courses are littered with people that have fast open run times walking their way to 4 plus hour splits.
Dude, with a name like speedracer, do you really need to ask that question. Furthermore, riding a speed concept?!? Next, you are going to ask if 26 mph on a hilly course is slow or fast! With a sub 1hr 15K, you had to beat a ton of runners. I don’t know how to do PINK Letters for sarcasm, but good luck with the rehab/training, sub 1hr is great.
26mph?? I average 28mph and I thought that was bad. Thanks for making my day!!
Kidding of course!! I’m still working on the hilly courses!! I’m at about 22.9 on the IM Louisville course. Part of the slow time had to do with me getting really sore in the neck area. Still getting used to and going through growing pains on long rides with the SC.
As for my knee injury, aren’t most MCL and ACL injuries the same?
My ulitmate goal is. 3:30 marathon at I’M Louisville. Maybe its a longshot, but that is what I am trying to achieve.
…
If you are running sub 1hr 15k’s now you should be able to translate that easily to a sub 3:30 IM run in August, unless you totally screw things up on the bike, that is.
That would have been a 3:15 if the race had been in April or May!!
I doubt that! I think most people grossly overestimate their marathon pace in an IM. 3:30 maybe on sub 3 hour stand alone marathon fitness with good weather and an easy, well paced bike would be a nice goal for any AGer.
