Is a 12 week specific training plan long enough for my first ironman. My plan is to finish my race season bike & run by late November take it easy in December and then start late Dec with the 12 week plan, what are your thoughts.I do have a good swimming base but no competition experience.
Depends on what your trying to achieve and what your training plan will invovle. Chances are if you’re a competitive cyclist and runner and have a good swimming base as you say you could nail the distance tomorrow. To absolutley achieve everything you’re physically capable of probably requires years if not decades.
Bar a few long bikes through the spring my preparation for my first IM this August was all this summer and probably amounted to much less than 12 weeks - I did fine and I’m sure you can too.
Good luck!
well that depends on your fitness right now. if you can run 2hrs and ride 4hrs comfortably and own a wetsuit, yes. it’s plenty of time. gale’s 13 weeks to a sub 13hr ironman plan is a great place to start.
The short answer is no. What are your longest rides, runs, and swims to date?
My fitness is not bad, I bike 2.35 for 105kms on a flatish route on about 2 hr pace for 21.1kms,I am 47 thats what concerned me about the the 12 week plan, I would be aiming at 18 hrs for my peak week,This will be my first training plan so i guess i am a little worried
.
Longest run 21.1 will do a 42 in Nov, 150km cycle race is my longest, i do ride regular 120+, swim 3 sessions a week longest 3km

How long have you been doing these sorts of distances? It sounds like you have the base to make a go of it.
marty’s the coach, but i think you’re fine.
Cycling 2yrs swim, run 1yr its the combination of all three that concerns me

My philosophy is that there’s no hurry. You could use next year as another to develop strength/endurance and finish 06 with a half and compete in an IM in 07. You could also do a 06 spring half-IM and a fall IM if you’re more interested in accelerating the achievement. Generally speaking, the more time you put into your training prior to an IM, the easier and less painful it is.
