Fun question for a Friday. How does your 100M swim time interval compare to your 400M run interval time?
I noticed (when I switched from the indoor yards pool to the outdoor Meter pool) that mine are nearly identical. Obviously it depends on the focus of your workout, but my usual time for both is 1:40 I can really push and get it down to the low 1:30s for both. BTW, I’d describe myself as a (somewhat) front of the pack (usually place in AG- F35-39), and have very consistent placings within the 3 sports.
What about you? Am I the only one who’s noticed this coincidence?
My 100m swim, 400m run, 1000m bike times have pretty well the same times for the same perceived exertion (80-85 seconds) when I do intervals of this length.
More importantly, 400m swim, 1600m run and 4000m bike are all around 6:00ish.
To tell you the truth, for the same time, the bike is a bit easier, but the swim and run are very similar.
They should be similar, for someone equally strong in both the swim and the run. The world records for the 100M free and 400M on the track are very close, IIRC. At least they were the last time I looked, about 15 years ago.
Of course when I swam I was capable of 53.5 for 100M. My 400M run time is nowhere close to that.
My 400m run time is much faster (at 47, it’s now up around 1:10) than my 100m swim PR, at 1:30 or so. It’s not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, though. I’ve only been swimming for 16 months but was a highly competitive track sprinter from early teens through early 20s.
How does everyone’s 10 mile run time (in minutes) compare to your 400m run time (in seconds)? Most of the people I know are within 1-2, some of the faster track guys didn’t match up.
Mine was right on (66:00 vs. 66 seconds). Unfortunately I lowered my 10 mile PR in May so now I have to take a couple seconds off of my 400m time.
Considering our masters lane does 100’s long course on the 1:20 base, I would say my swimming is light years ahead of my running. Would that mean it is like someone just cruising along at 5:20 pace per mile? Maybe I should go for a run…
The 10mile:400meter comparison does not work for me. My 10 Mile PR is 75 minutes, and like I said I can get 400M to around 90 seconds. BTW, I tend to think of myself as more of a short course racer, I tend to race & place better at shorter events (both tri & running).
At first I thought this was a ridiculous comparison. At second glance, it probably still is. However, my initial thought was that my run was much faster, but on closer inspection, the are rather interestingly very close. About 1:20 for the run, 1:30 for the swim. I’m a better runner than swimmer.
I’ll second your opinion about the 100M and the 400M being very close in time. I was thinking about that comparison when I was in high school 15yrs ago, getting my ass kicked in the 100 Open. The best swim times were about what the best Quartermilers would do on the track team.
Trying to find a relationship between 10mile and 400m is a bit far reached.
No more far reached than trying to find a relationship between swimming and running don’t you think?
I agree the relationship might not mean much, but it is fun to think about. My most recent 10 mile PR is 61 minutes and like I said before I could run right about 60 for 400, so that is close.
Or how about your 2.4 open water swim to 10 mile? That is the same for me.
All-in-all, I think you can see I am probably a better runner than swimmer. Certainly at the short stuff.
