10 speed chainrings with Etap...Can I do it?

So I am about to install some Etap on my tri ride. I would kind of like to run my all black, more aero chainrings on my crank. The chainrings are 10 speed chainrings though. I also have a brand new 10 speed chain I was going to run before I upgraded to Etap. Can I run the 10 speed chain and chainrings with the Etap 11 system? Thanks.

Ten speed chainrings on eTap will work. The drive train will be very noisy! Sell the chain and buy an 11 speed chain. While the 10 speed chain will fit over the 11 speed cog, you will GREATLY accelerate the wear of that new cassette prematurely. New chain is $19 vs new cassette which is $70.

^^^^This.

Use the rings (chainrings don’t have speeds).

Get an 11speed chain.

I was wondering about this too regarding the 10sp vs 11sp chain rings. I thought I had read somewhere that the spacing was actually different between the rings, and you will get more rub in certain gears when using the 10sp rings?

11sp chain for sure though!

Look at companies that only sell cranks and/or rings (Rotor, Praxis, etc.). They don’t offer different versions based on the grouppo speed.

Our results have been mixed.
