Maybe I am blind, but I only saw one section of road longer than 10 miles without a turn.

Somehow, I envisioned long course races being long stretches of straight road, in the aero position, pedaling in circles, going into a trance … now, I think I’ll have to focus on “not getting lost” as my #1 priority. =)

Thats what you call a technical course. Something for the cyclists with good bike handling skills.

Not a boring old straight line out and back type of course that we normally get. This type of course is just a whole lot more interesting and also takes a little more concentration which also helps the time fly by.

When you are out there, you will certainly not percieve it as a criterium course. I don’t think it is that bad, in fact you may think it is fun. If it was truly technical, you would have baby heads, tree stumps, drop-offs and whoop-dee-doos, as well as a couple river crossings, bears, and no bottle exchanges. Hopefully your cycling skill set includes 90 degree turns…

you may find it seems to go by quicker than a long out-and-back 90km. like the others said, skills are crucial: think how much time you can make on an otherwise identical cyclist if you’re 2 seconds faster through each corner!

Looks like a fun course to me… Is it one loop? What does the elevation profile look like?

problem is, these guys are usually the ones that are ALL OVER the road, one foot unclipped (like your slippery cleat is going to help you at this point, come on), then are in WAY too low a gear to come out of the corner…again, all over the road trying to get the cranks clicked over.

Sometimes it’s best to compromise your line (and speed through a corner) to ensure that you get the INSIDE line. It’s much harder for an out of control cyclist to take you out if you’ve got the inside line.

Why compromise speed? Shoulders and hands were made for gentle nudges on dufuses who can’t corner.

If I’m already in the corner and he comes over at me, sure - I totally agree. But if he’s out in front and I’m setting up my apex, it’s just as easy to change my line. Besides - you never know when he could come over too fast and hit your front wheel, etc.

you canandians are too kind, thats why I like you guys!

reminds me of the IMAZ course (which i must admit, seemed to go by pretty quickly because of all the turns)----no chance to get bored, and also you dont have to deal with constant wind with the frequent direction changing.

you dont have to deal with constant wind with the frequent direction changing.

That’s what I was thinking.

I normally ride “long loops” just because I am familiar with those roads and they have a nice grade to them, very low-traffic, rolling hills, etc.

One day I went out and was just turning whenever (often) I felt like turning, just having a blast … looked down at my HRM, and I’d been riding for 3h 15min. I was stunned.

I also agree about the wind. That’s the only bad thing about the long out and backs, one way is an absolute heaven and the other way is well … building mental toughness. I prefer the wind in my face going out, b/c the whole time I’m think “Man, I am gonna fly on the way back … effortless big gear riding”.

Coupla things that I should have prefaced …

I’ll likely swim 45-50min. I doubt I’ll be “shoulder to shoulder” with too many folks on the turns.

I looked up the previous year’s results, and I’m paced to finish last in my age group. I may just have to hammer the swim and see how many folks in my AG I can “take out” in the turns. I haven’t decided if I am joking or not.

I’m not all that fast and likely won’t be racing the bike … more like saving my legs to make a move on the run to try and beat the 7h mark.

TT, like I did, you are probably underestimating your swim speed. With other bodies around, feet to draft, etc., I’d bet you are at least a few mins faster than you think.

As for that course, it reads like a lot of turns, but it still just averages like what, one per minute? No big deal. And I concur on taking the inside line. Nobody can wash out and take you down that way. Just be sure to look over your inside shoulder before cutting that turn!
