Hangin’ here for one more day and have 1/2 mile hill repeats on the schedule for tomorrow. If someone could suggest a good place for these I’d appreciate it. If it’s on dirt even better!
And if anyone has a lead on a homestay here for mid march thru mid april I’ll take that too!
I don’t know where you are in SLO but there are trails everywhere. You might call Art’s Cyclery and ask for their mountain bike guy for some trail guidance. For a paved area, I might try O’Connor road behind Cuesta College. It’s closed to traffic so there are few cars. Park at Cuesta College in the back near the baseball diamond. Head out back through a gate and meander your way through the roads in Camp SLO over to O’Connor Road. Seems like the first hill you come to might be a half mile but I’m not sure.
Been messing around on Gmap pedometer and found Poly Canyon… from campus to some building up the hill it looks to be about .6… is this trail? or road? I need my thoft thurfaces.
I haven’t done any running in my time here due to injury, but the one area I thought of that might work is the trail head to Bishop’s Peak. I’m not sure of the gradient, but it’s decently steep . If you want to check it out, here are some directions: If you are on Santa Rosa St/Highway 1, head WEST on Foothill. Foothill will gradually rise for about 1.5 miles. As you crest the hill you will sweep slightly to the left and then the road drops down. At this point, the housing stops and it becomes rural. You will then sweep to the right and as you come around the corner there is a dirt section that is just big enough for cars to park. Park it there, hop the fence and go. I’m not sure of the distances, but the first outcropping of trees on the trail might be close to a 1/2 mile.
Poly canyon is a dirt road. You run from campus and then it is a dirt road loop of about 9 miles or so. You have to go through some cow fences if I remember correctly. Some nice long tough hills.
I spent a summer there in 2001 and ran there every day. Hopefully it has not changed much.
