Affordable gravel wheels
Looking to upgrade the stock wheels on my gravel bike...

I wandering if anyone has any experience with the gravel offering of the more affordable manufacturer (reliability, comfort).

Ex:
https://www.lightbicycle.com/...nd-gravel-bikes.html
https://www.huntbikewheels.cc/...disc-x-wide-wheelset
Etc.

They are about 2-3x cheaper than the big guys...

Thanks in advance for your feedback

One of my local bike shops builds up the lightbike rims with a choice of Swiss hubs or Industry 9's. I have a set of each--the Swiss hubs on the road bike and the I 9's on my gravel bike. Have used both for two years with no troubles. The gravel wheels have lots of rough miles in them with only a few minor scratches.

My gravel bike wheels are from Nextie, I have about 7k miles on them with no issues at all. I also have a set of LightBicycle 56mm aero wheels and they’ve been great, both have DTSwiss 350 hubs. Both companies were great to work with

If you’re in North America I would look at these guys.
Super good cross and gravel wheels. Also customer service is second to none. You can basically get any configuration you want. I.E hubs, spokes, colour etc.

HED Eroicas are only slightly more than the Hunts, and 2mm wider internally. They are 60 grams heavier though.

I don't have a set of them, but have ridden my Ardennes blacks on some pretty miserable chunky gravel without incident.

I have been using the Bontrager Aeolus Pro 5 disc wheels on my Trek Boone and they have been awesome. They also have the Pro 3 if you are looking for something a little shallower.

Iv got 2 sets of hunt wheels and they are exceptional value. Both are alloy rims not the carbon.

Mavic makes some good wheels but I have always felt they massively inflate the retail prices to help with the OEM market. With the allroads being stocked on a lot of bikes so on paper it like you are getting a $600+ wheel set but the reality is you can get much better wheels for $600. Having said that they are decent wheels and because they come OEM on so many bikes they can be had for cheap on the second hand market. So for like $200-250 they are a good shout.

I just purchased a set from November Bicycles and have been happy with them. I also have a set of HED Belgium + that are solid.

Mavic has a $350 Allroad with 22mm internal. Not svelte but a bomber wheelset with durable hubs.

I picked up a used pair of Bontrager Aeolus 3V a few months back. The mrsp is 1300, but REI carries them so if you buy during one of their 20% deals that would drop it down to a similar price as the light bicycle.

Really nice specs for gravel - similar dimensions to the well liked ENVE AR series. ~35mm deep and have a 25mm internal and 32mm is external width. They have a hooked bead so no limit on tire choice. Mine weighed in at 1553 grams. I got them right before winter hit, so unfortunately I have only gotten a couple rides on them so far.

Yeah those are essentially Aksiums whereas the more expensive versions are essentially Ksyriums. The naming system holds across like elite and pro versions.

I have a set of 10 year Aksiums with shed loads of miles that have never put a foot wrong. However this is not everyone’s experience with Aksiums and I think the low price reflects a limited QC process. So the cheaper Allroads can be great but I suspect there are some dud pairs just like there are with Aksiums.

I just read your article and wanted to add one edit.

Your HED Eroica rear wheel has an XDR driver.

I'm glad you like those as I just pulled the trigger and ordered the Hunt 4 Seasons to replace the stock wheelset and tires on my alloy Cannondale Topstone. I was debating quite a few of the ones mentioned here, including some carbon options, but when I factored in purchasing tires, rotors, and a cassette, my cheapness won out and I opted for the alloy Hunts. They have great reviews so I'm looking forward to trying them out whenever they arrive (currently out of stock and on order for end of February).

I'm going to use the Hunt wheelset primarily as my road setup which leads to the following stupid question for anyone that cares to respond:

My current wheelset has 6-bolt rotors. If I put centerlock rotors on this new wheelset, is it likely that I'll have to adjust the calipers everytime when swapping wheelsets? I want to be able to quickly change between road and offroad. I'll put 6-bolt rotors on the new wheelset if that will make things easier.

Whether or not you have to adjust calipers would probably be due just as much to the different hubs versus the type of rotor.

At any rate, gets some rotor shims and and you can use those to adjust the spacing/location of the rotor so it’s an easier swap between wheelsets

Since when did $1000 wheels qualify as "affordable"?

This would be closer to my definition, even after paying someone else to build them:

Centre lock or 6 bolt will make no material difference to the position of the rotor and therefor the calliper.

That's not to say there might not be any slight rubbing you would find swapping between wheels of any type. 👌

Just ordered a set of alloy Hunt 4 Season X-Wides (25 in, 29 out) as my second wheelset. Will be using my DT Swiss 1800s on the road with GP5000s 32 TL and the Hunts will be set up with some Panaracer 38 slicks for gravel rides. It was between the Hunts, HED Eroica and Mavic Allroad Elites for me. Decided to go with Hunt in the end because of the price. The cost of rotors, cassette and tires add up... Hunts have good reviews, they're light weight and plenty wide.

Rodeo Labs makes both 650b and 700c wheels worth taking a look at. These wheels are the best wheels I've ridden off road and they can take a beating.

Rodeo is a smaller company focused 100% on riding your bike any way you want and having fun. That said, gravel/ dirt is the main focus. Definitely worth a look. A slight increase in the price, but worth it in my mind.

I'll second this. Woven has been awesome - I have way too many of their wheels and haven't had any issues!

I don't want to do the math on how much I have spent but I currently have (all disc brake)

2 sets of 700 gravel wheels
1 set of 650b gravel
1 set of cyclocross
1 set of mtn bike
1 set of 80mm fatibke

I spec'ed all mine with cx-rays and they offer custom decals with each order. Customer service has been fantastic to date.

Presumably, the intent is to upgrade, but not drop $2,500 on a set of wheels. There is not much for decent wheels in the $500 range that are going to be appreciably better than OEM wheels.
