Did mine today at 10:30am and rode conservatively early on (88th out of 140 or so starters) and I did try to keep my power below 250. As we got closer to the climb I steadily passed folks and in the end finished 51st and according to Zwift in 20:25, but I saw 19:55 on the clock. Oh well.
I rode the Shiv-Disc TT bike with Enve 3.4 wheels. I used the BBS plan of going under FTP on flat/downhill, then harder uphill. Rode at 259w for the flat part, and 320w for the hill.
Time: 19:19.
I probably should have went a bit harder on the first part. Not sure if the TT bike is the way to go or not. Many people are using different setups.
Also, this was a cool idea by zwift. Our team chat room has been buzzing all weekend with us all comparing times, discussing strategies, etc. It’s been fun.
19:07. P5 with 808s. 279W, 159bpm. Stac Halcyon trainer.
As an aside: I think the choice of trainer is almost as important as the bike and wheels, maybe even more. I’m sure that the (lack of) inertia your trainer provides you when in low gears can seriously hamper your watt hammer on those 16% grades. And if I could choose the Stac would not be the trainer I picked for this particular task.
I think drafting is off for the events so you really get hurt for the first 5km if you pick a road bike.
It is, and that’s what makes it kind of interesting. Do you go for a more aero setup, or lighter setup. You spend about half the time in the flats and half climbing.
For context, Nishimura finished at 17:30 (4:36 behind Roglic), missed the time cut, and was eliminated. Many GTs have a short opening prologue TT. At 8km, this was short enough to be a prologue but the organizers decided to call it Stage 1. The difference is that you can’t miss the time cut in a prologue but you can in a stage.
Cool graph. I think you reversed the info in your last sentence.
Thanks. Since it was labeled a stage, the normal time cut rules applied. Nishimura fell below the limit, so he was eliminated. If it had been labeled a prologue there are no eliminations and he would have started the next day.
Zwift TT bike with Zipp 808’s. Average power 210 watts (to give a woeful 2.67 W/kg) (you can work out how fat I am). Age - 49 and 362/365.
LeMond trainer avec Wattbox. Goodness knows how much tougher it would be on my Kickr…
I didn’t see the actual Zwift time when I got to the finish as my eyes were bleeding. Strava segment “Spaghetti Bologanese” 24.04. The last 2km took about half that. At least. And a gazillion folks on road bikes came past.
I tried it again tonight at 8:30pm EST (last effort was 10:30am today) but this time I rode the Cervelo P5 with Enve 3/4 wheels and managed a 19:15 - and that was 15 seconds behind Sam Warriner. My average wattage was 301 with a 3.7 w/kg
