Zipp wheels (8)

Anyone have problems with 404s getting out of true after only 20 miles.

It’s not uncommon for new wheels to need retruing after some riding.

That’s a shame. I rode a set of 404’s almost every ride from 2001 to 2013 when I sold them and they never went out of true.

I’m right on the weight limit of my Flo’s and they are still as true as they were out the box after about 1000 miles!

lol

nonsense!!!

I used them for a half last year and I have been using them for about 4 weeks while I train for Honu. I don’t know if it’s the awesome roads we have in Hawaii, but I haven’t hit any large pot holes. I weigh 195 so I don’t think it’s my weight.

Otherwise i like the wheels.

So they’ve come out of true after 20 miles of riding multiple times? Or it was just once? I’ve had really good luck with Zipp’s and just broke a spoke for the first time in who knows how many thousands of miles.

If it’s a constant thing, it may be worth looking into it more closely. If it was a just a one time thing, I wouldn’t think too much of it. You’re right that being 195lbs shouldn’t be causing this.

Is there an easy way to determine if the wheel is true? how can you tell if the wheels need truing?

The easiest way is for you to get one of the brake pads close to the braking surface, spin the wheel, and see if it touches. If it does at any point the wheel is wobbly (assuming it’s straight in the dropouts.) Sometimes you’ll see the wheel have a bit of a wobble, but if it’s barely noticeable, you don’t need to get it trued right away.
