why should i buy these $45 skewers? is it purely a weight-weenie thing? is the $5.00 skewer that i use on my trainer effectively the same thing? afterall, the wheel stays in place…so i’m thinking that that is all that matters.
go to performancebike.com, they have 24$ titanium skewer that weigh 76grams, much less than zipp, salsa…and half or less the price.
$45 skewers are for people that spend $1450 on wheels.
If you only spend $50 on each wheel, $5 skewers are fine.
It’s all about image.
-The coolness manifesto, it’s coming
How much performance improvement do you gain by buying lighter skewers?
Just curious - it’s not like the skewer is part of the rotational mass of the wheel - it doesn’t move
The Zipp skewers give you an aero advantage. Definitely worth the price.
And another thing. Since they’re made out of Ti, they’ll absorb the road vibration better, which means more comfort for you. Definitely get them.
Since I switched to name brand Ti skewers, I’ve noticed a marked improvement in my run off the bike. It’s like night and day. It’s almost as big a speed improvement as my carbon rear triangle and bladed top tube. Almost, but not quite.
actually those little dimples on the cheapie skewers for grip act sort of like the dimples on a Zipp disk or golf ball creating a 2-3 micrometer boundary layer of air around the skewer, thus making it more aero, and this the extra $50 for the skewers. And the cheapie ones start to rust and the chrome all falls off they get even lighter!!! They have also been shown to accellerate faster than a Zipp skewer* (on a downhill of course). But seriously, you gotta admit good skewers are a hell of a lot easier to use than cheap ones…
I sold two sets today. I’m honestly not sure why you should buy them. They are nice quality, we’ve never had any problems and seem to work easily. To me, a cro-mo version for $19.99 would be finr with me. Truthfully, I think they should come with the wheels…
But then again, I want a new car. So I’m glad people buy them. They aren’t cheap, but they’re pretty good. Nothing spectacular, just pretty good.
Since there’s been a number of posts recently questioning the value of Zipp products, I couldn’t resist this one. Why would anybody buy a Zipp disc when CH Aero covers are availble for $59.95.
Why? you know why … because they are Zipp, … bike jewelry
Same reason for the Zipp cage. Coolness.

In truth, the CH Aero is a good way to check out a disk like wheel but really isn’t a good long term solution. They are heavy, can slip off the wheel and a pain to take on/off.
The Renn disk is really not much more if you buy a dedicated wheel and cover. The disk is less of a worry.
Actually they’re not that heavy on a light wheel, have never slipped and I have mine on a dedicated wheel. However, I agree with you about Renn, but my question was about Zipp.
cerveloguy,
I’m starting to get a little sick of your stupid ch aero cover for whatever $.
Punch (ch aero cover cerveloguy ) into the search site and you’ll get 29 hits. Maybe you should kind of move on, what do you think?
You must be a Zipp disc owner!

And if you click on his logon name you see that he has posted over 2600 messages in total.
What was your point again?
for one torsional stiffness. A Corima HR+ disc may not be more aero than a CH cover, but it most certainly is faster.

forget the zipp cage, that’s like putting just gold on teh bike, you gotta go platinum and get the new Campy cage, feather (and this is no exaggeration) light and more than a hundred bucks!
I got mine to match my wheels. Why skimp on cheap (relatively speaking) skewers when you just bought an incredibly expensive set of wheels.?

I have found that the frou-frou skewers generally don’t clamp into the dropouts too terribly well. $10 Joytech skewers do just as well, if not better than $45 skewers…
