I run an argon18 e114 with zipp return to center shifters going into dur-ace 7900 components. The problem I have is it seems like I cannot keep the rear derailler adjusted so it doesn’t skip. My local shop mechanic that works on my bike tells me that it is because the R2C tend to be “finicky”
Anybody else have problems with these shifters? If so, any solutions or thing I should look for?
I have the SRAM R2C shifters, which aside from the ratio are identical and have no issues. I know Zipp makes two versions, a SRAM one and a Shimano one, sure you got the right ones?
I hope you didn’t get the wrong R2C’s. They make 2 types, one version compatible w/ SRAM RD’s and one version compatible w/ Shimano RD’s. The two brands have different actuation ratios and the rear shifters/RD’s are not interchangeable.
Check obvious things first.
1-Correct R2C and RD match
2-10 speed and NOT 9 speed cassette
3-Cassette and chain are not worn too badly
4-high and low set screws adjusted properly. This can be done w/out even touching the shifter if you have exposed cables.
5-barrel adjuster on RD or possibly on frame boss bottomed out and then backed out 1/4 turn to start as your default position.
6-Cable tightened all the way down when in small cog.
7-Repeat 3-6 until crisp shifting.
+1 to the above. I’d bet it was the incorrect R2C shifter. Does anyone know how to tell (unboxed) the two versions of the R2C shifters apart? A model number on the shifter body maybe?
Oh one other thing. Make sure your cable housing sweeps are not too tight, crazy long or binding the cable somewhere. Excessive cable friction can cause the RD to not take up every bit of slack in the cable and sit slightly off once the shift is completed. Sometimes all it takes to bring that crispness back is pulling the housings off and lubing them up with some injectable syn grease You only want to use syn grease as there is usually a plastic housing in there that can disintegrate into a sticky mess with petro-based grease.
My Zipp R2C works perfectly with the Ultegra 10 speed RD. It is a heck of an improvement over the Shimano bar end shifters that can create poor ergometric angles.
When working they actually shift well, as others have said check to make sure you don’t have the SRAM ones. If you have the correct shifter then its most likely an issue with the housing or cable creating excessive friction at some point. Also if your bike has a replaceable derailleur hanger check to make sure that isnt bent.
My experience with lots of sets of the R2S (return to sender) is they are either working well or broken. Had to send quite a few back for warranty replacement. Hopefully SRAM gets the QC bugs worked out as the concept if good.
Also check tightness with the derailleur hanger, I had all sports of problems setting mine up until a saavy shop mechanic discovered the error. Now they shift flawlessly
