Zipp/Power Tab technical question pls

Can a Powertap Hub be laced on an existing 808 wheel? In other words, can the wheel be dismantled and rebuild it with a PT hub?

Yep, assuming you can find a powertap hub with the same spoke hole count.

Thanx. My LBS said otherwise. They said it has nothing to do with the spoke count, it’s the spoke angle drilling in the rim small flange ,large flange!! Maybe i should call Zipp to confirm.

It’s possible that you would need a slightly different length spoke. The hub is probably slightly larger, and the flange does prevent you from changing the angle of the spokes. That said, I highly doubt that Zipp makes an entirely different rim strictly for PT hubs. If you can get a new wheel laced in a PT, I see no reason why your cant.

Yes. wheelbuilder.com

I think your LBS confused the 808 with the 1080. You cant lace a Powertap hub into a 1080 rim due to the spoke angle.

Thanx everyone. I finally called wheelbuilder. They said it can be done.

I also contacted Zipp and here is their response… “Zipp will only do a PT upgrade on 20 808 hole rims. We find the high lateral spoke angle on 24 hole PT hubs result in spoke breakage.”

So i am still getting mixed messages!!

Basically what I have heard is that as soon as you release the tension by cutting the spokes and add the PT you have voided the Zipp warranty. You may want to verify with Zipp that if your wheel cracks/breaks after you have cut the spokes that they will replace it.

My LBS says Zipp won’t touch it once you’ve cut the spokes.
