From what I have learned in speaking with a Zipp technical sales representative a few things a different about the 2009 Zipp wheels, over the 2008. First of all they cleaned up the dimpled surface for a better cosmetic look. The hubs were also completely redesigned for 2009. Zipp uses a solid pawl freehub with wider deployment springs for improved freehub ratcheting. I also understand that this year Zipp, along with many other wheel companies, are using a slightly wider rim profile for improved areodynamics and also a little better rolling resistance. You can also do some pretty custom color options with the new decals as well.
I ask this because when I called Bike Sports Michigan (I wasnt able to speak to Tom directly), they said the 2009 were ‘much different’ than the 2008’s.
They mentioned the hub as the big difference maker but I am wondering if - in the used market - that is worth a $200-$400 expenditure.
Not racing Ironman these days by the way, Olympic and shorter.
The one thing that does seem the same is weight for tubulars at around 950 grams.
Anyone else have info on the 08 v 09 comparison besides graphics, etc…?
