Zipp Brake Pads - FRUSTRATED!

What the fuck. Why do these pads get thicker at the end? I like my brakes to be pretty tight meaning very little pull on the lever begins to slow me down. Because of this little bit, I have to pull the pads further away from the wheel so that it clears the rim and doesn’t rub. Does anyone know what I’m talking about here? Why the hell did they do this? I guess I could shave that end off with a razor blade but why? These things are $25/set.

It’s called toe-in to allow for modulation while braking.

You might be able to correct it by re-aligning your brake shoes so that they’re flat(ter) against your rim.

The fat part is actually in the heel of the break, it doesn’t make sense to me either but if you do toe your breaks in it will fix it. For some lightweight brakes with less adjustability it is a problem and you have to move the shoes farther away. I do think that they stop carbon rimmed wheels especially well so i stick with them anyway.

I’m running clinchers but I am using Zipp’s recommendation on using their pads on all wheels (including clinchers). It really sucks.

My bad for putting this in classifieds. I just hit New Post without paying attention to where I was. Can we move this guy?

As they say, there’s a sucker born every minute…

I do this for the same reason I run factory oil filters on my 4Runner until the warranty runs out. I can take it to the dealer and they can’t give me a “fuck you, this is out of warranty” schtick.

I prefer SwissStop yellow carbon pads to the Zipp pads. Much better wear and braking power. Hope that helps,

Dan

They’re made by Kool Stop. Kool Stop pads are made that way. It’s only a ‘problem’ for the initial break-in period. I now use the Kool Stop black/carbon pads on the Zipp tubulars with the carbon/ceramic braking surface. Kool Stop black pads are ok by Zipp. Same performance for much lower price.
