Zipp 808 Not Taking Air

Yeah, probably loads of posts on this topic already…maybe I am finanlly seeing the light.

But for now…

I think the knurled valve core nut has closed inside my 808 (w/Zipp extender), and therefore won’t allow air to be pumped in. Any way to open this thing without dismantling tire?

(Special tools, ingenious ideas?)

Thanks.

Had the same issue twice before. In the first instance, I was able to unscrew the valve extender and put a little pressure on the tube valve thus loosening it.

The second time, I got frustrated with dealing with it and I took the tube off and fixed the problem. I suggest this route. Take the tube off, open the valve (don’t unscrew all the way, just enough that it is open) and re-glue.

I just used a 2.5mm long T allen key to move the knuckle around.

Once the valve core nut is unscrewed I always pinch the nut with needle nose pliers so the nut will not vibrate down. Just pull the tire off and fix the valve so it will not happen at a race. Have a good one.

Topeak valve extenders have an internal plunger that grips the valve core and can open and close it. If you can get your current extender off (i.e., if you did not tape it on), that would be an easy fix.

Thanks everyone - Problem solved (at least for now).

I used the long 2.5mm T-key method.

  1. Remove valve extender (not taped).
  2. Gently insert long 2.5mm T-key into rim valve hole and feel tubie valve stem.
  3. Use T-key to “swirl” valve nut in counterclockwise motion, thus re-opening.
  4. Re-install extender.
  5. Pump air.

Very easy.

Thanks, again!

When you replace tire there are valve extenders the have
a valve stem in them so you just remove the one in the tire
