Zipp 404 Shimano->Campy

I have 404’s with Shimano hubs and would like to use the 404’s also with my new Campy equipped bike. It seems that for the recent 404’s you can just buy a new cassette body but mine seems to be slightly older (they are about 3 years old or so).

What do I need to do?

Thanks

Older Zipp wheels are also able to be converted. Go to your local Zipp dealer. They should be able to determine year and which cassette body you need in order to convert to Campy.

Expect to pay $75-125 for a new body

Or you can just get a SRAM 10speed cassette which is compatible with Shimano or Campy drivetrains. If you go the SRAM route, I would recommend also getting a SRAM chain, as the shifting seems to be the best with both together.

I have a SRAM cassette and chain on my Record equiped bike and have been very pleased with the performance.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like it could be an easier option than changing the cassette body. I had a quick look at the SRAM web site. You are talking about the OG1070 cassette?

Right now I have a record cassette and chain, I would hate to have to change the chain each time I go from one wheel to the other. Was the shifting bad with the Campy chain on the SRAM cassette? Is that combo OK or not recommended?

Thanks

Campy chain works fine… I just think the SRAM worked a little better. That and it’s half the price!

When your campy chain wears out, replace it with a SRAM, otherwise, use it.

And yes, the 1070 cassette. I think a 1090 will be available soon…

I also found that Wheels manufacturing makes a cassette compatible for 10s campy on a Shimano hub body. Anybody using this on a 404?

I use a Wheels Mfg conversion cassette with several Shimano rear wheels. It has been decent, though not quite as good as my Campy cassette. I’ve never tried the SRAM option.

I just had an online chat with Zipp. They don’t know anything about the wheels manufacturing cassette and recommend to change the hub body to a campy one for $100.

I am not quite sure how easy it is to go from one hub body to the other though.

Thats a standard response from any reputable manufacturer. It does not mean it will not work.

Sure. I am just waiting to hear if anybody runs this wheels manufacturing cassette on a Zipp 404 with Shimano hub (mine is from 2004 what they call their 202 hub). I am beeing a bit careful as the web site from wheels manufacturing states that several wheels are not compatible (Spinergy, Shimano wheels and Chris King hubs).

I was lucky in that Wheels Mfg is local to me, so in addition to spending some time on the phone with Paul, I also go to go out there to see his operation. One of the spacers that was sent out was a little thin, so Paul had me come in and we went over every cog and spacer to make sure that ALL the widths were correct. The customer service from Wheels was amazing. My suggestion is to call the guy and talk to him. While I can’t see any problems with an older model 404, he’d be the best person to know if there are.

NB: Zipp’s solution is likely the best one, as it will allow you to run a stock cassette. I went with an aftermarket conversion because I was using a Corima disc which cannot be converted easily. Another advantage to the Wheels however, is that you can custom build the cassette and pick your cogs individually. A nice touch.

Yes. I have a wheels manufacturing cassette on a 2004 Zipp 404 with Shimano hub on an otherwise all campy 10 bike. Shifting is fine, haven’t had any problems.

Thanks for the info on Wheels Manufacturing. I have an older road bike with a Campy 8 speed that needs a new cassette and their conversion kit will work fine.

It is super easy to change the freehub over. You need two 5mm allen keys and about 60 seconds to do the job. My tt bike is dura-ace and my road bike is record, so I switch the freehub back and forth quite often (606’s).

Thanks. Can you actually leave the cassette on both freehubs when you do this?
