ZIPP 303 bought on eBay CRACKED after 100 miles

I bought a new ZIPP 303 rear clincher on eBay a couple of monthes ago and it cracked after about 100 miles. I hadn’t hit any big pot holes etc. I was worried that I was stuck but took it into my LBS (which is a dealer for ZIPP) and they sent it back for evaluation.

Found out yesterday that ZIPP replaced it NO CHARGE!!!

Since there have been discussions about eBay ZIPP’s here I thought some of you might have wanted to know this.

Good for you to get a bargain and good for Zipp twice over for having the cajones to stand behind their product so.

“good for Zipp twice over for having the cajones to stand behind their product so.”

That’s funny, my new Zipp disk cracked at Ironman this year. It’s a split in the carbon fiber along one of the fiber weaves. This was my first ride on the wheels and I did not notice the crack until after I finished the race.

I contacted Zipp and they said they won’t replace the wheel. WTF, $1500 for a set of wheels that have 112 miles on them. No visible damage, scratches etc. It was not dropped or stepped on.

So much for Zipp standing behind their product? I’ll never own or recommend another Zipp product. The funny thing is, I’ve been riding Zipp for many years. I’ve owned two sets of 404s and the 909s. It’s only wheel I’ve used for racing. Oh well, at least I have other choices for my next set of race wheels.

I have the front Zipp wheel for sale if any is interested? It has 112 miles on it and Tufo Lite tubulars.

Have a safe weekend folks. Happy training.

I have never heard a story like that about Zipp customer service. The original poster is more the norm.

Sorry to hear about the problem. At least you finished the race.

Did they say it was ruined and you couldn’t ride it? Or that it was just cosmetic damage?

Ruined and can ride it. There is actually a perfect split along the carbon weave starting at the rim part and going down towards the hub on both sides. It’s about 6 inches long on each side.

No signs of dents, scratches or trama on the wheel except for the crack. I may try to take it up to a friend who has a carbon fiber boat building shop and see if they can fix it so it’s ridable. If they can make it safe and ridable, obviously I won’t be able to sell the set. I’ll probably just strip all of the ZIPP stickers off the wheels and let my friends use the wheels if they want for local races. I’ll be riding something other than Zipp this year.
