Anyone running Zipp 101’s as both race wheels and everyday wheels? Thinking about a set and putting a cover on the rear. Wondering how much of a difference a deeper front wheel would really make given the excellent aero data the 101’s put out. Has anyone else done this?

I’ll bite. Is the data comporable to an 808? Here is a biased overview of the wheels http://www.zipp.com/_media/pdfs/support/aero_edge09.pdf
What speaks for the 101 is that it is cheaper, lighter and has the same hubs as the other line of Zipps like the 808, or 404 (I believe).
It’s also aluminum so perhaps more durable and better braking handling performance, if that’s important for your racing.
What about just sticking with your current wheelset and buying a disc for races?
Also have a look at FLO 30s. Very similar aero gain, good reputation, and less than half the cost of the zipps. They’re about 40g heavier for the set tho IIRC
On days with low wind, and/or races where you go very fast (either because they are short and you are pretty strong on the bike, or because you are really strong on the bike) a 101/cover setup will be pretty close to a deep wheel.
Days with higher wind and or slower speeds, the 404/808 type wheels will have a substantial advantage.
A deeper front wheel will make more difference than the cover on the back.
101’s are nice though, I rode the poo out of a set for 18 months, no problems.
they are good wheel, but there are a good number of other wheels that are in the “101,” category that I would pick over them…particularly if they are going to be everyday drivers and race… I would consider enve 25.

For the price, the only other set of wheels that are comparable are the Flo 30’s. Enve’s and carbon Zipps are almost double the price.
If you want to go with Zipps, my opinion is do it right. For triathlon I would at least do firecrest 404s. With the 101s, it seems like you are basically paying for the name “Zipp” on otherwise unextraordinary wheels. Echo on the price point, if you’re trying to save the money staying away from their firecrest lineup, just go with another brand.
I have Zipp 101’s as my training wheels and a 808 FC front and 900 disc as racing wheels. I also had the pre FC 404’s which I sold to fund the 101’s. I thought the older 404’s were terrible in the wind. The 101’s are the best in crosswinds of all the combo’s I have used. I also like how they feel with 25mm tires. I also like the stealth aero factor in that I can do group rides without looking like “that guy”.
I have been very happy with the 101’s and raced them at IMAZ this year for grins and giggles. I definitely enjoyed not worrying about keeping the bike straight in the crosswinds. I was sick for the race and was not an “A” race by any means. I also wanted to keep it simple with no extra wheel bag/changing wheels and had new tires on the 808/900 that were untested too.

I have done this for a couple of years now. I train and race in hilly areas (mostly). I like them. But I have to say, that after renting a 404 it was awesome. 101 and a cover is perfect for the rear wheel.
