Just the other day, I was told that the Zack Attack should be coming to the end of the road. Well ladies and gents…he is looking good as ever. After taking a few months away from training, he returned to SD for his spring training. There has been no sign of “jacking” around at all. Zack has been running the local runners into the ground while tearing up the Henshaw loop.
Who ever said that you have to be in your youth to haul ass? Jurgen is pushing 40. Although he raced in the 29 and under at the Carlsbad 5000, he ran 15:40.
Former pro Mark Montgomery has just called me out on the bike to kick my ass…so I gotta go…
I have to say, he is one of the best to watch and cheer for. He has always seemed to really enjoy the sport. Was it in Hawaii where he walked most of the run and was just happy to be out there despite having a bad day? Very classic.
That is great news that he is back on the circuit again.
Guys like Zack, Hellriegel, Larsen and Bjorne are what this sport is all about (at least from a spectator perspective). Hammer to the front, and go till ya blow. Yes, he did walk it on during his tenth Hawaii Ironman. I think on the coverage, he said that he NEVER walks anywhere…not even to the 7-11, which made his swim-bike-run-walk finish that much more admirable.
In the last couple of years though, Zack seems to have tamed it down on the bike and has turned back into the “runner” that he used to be. I believe that I once read that in his youth he was a 800 m stud. Hard to believe, but true !
This is news to me! So I am so glad to see that he has turned it up. Zack is a true class act. I hope that the couple month break from training allowed him to re-gain his motivation. The guy has amazing longevity…and this is something to admire in itself. So many seasons of strong racing…so many seasons of showing us tremendous cycling ability…and a positive attitude.
just the fact that he is still out and racing at the level is remarkable…
15:49 for 5k on the road is pretty impressive. Just out of curiosity, does he spend much time in the weight room? Or is his natural mesomorphic body type enough to place this training at the low end of the priority scale. As an AGer who has a tough time getting in enough S/B/R hours, I find weights tend to drop off the plan pretty easily. I am not naturally muscled, rather ectomorphic, so probably ought to make this a higher priority. Just curious about someone of his body type and obvious natural power.
If you buy some weights and keep them at home, you can do 20 min of squats, step ups and lunges using light weight and high reps (like 20-30). This way no excuses for not doing weights. I’ve used this formula for over 15 years and it keeps you strong.
I would suspect that Zack is naturally carrying all that cosmetic bulk around…actually, that bulk must be functional since he is always kicking ass.
Jurgen Zack looked like Elvis today on the Swami’s ride. He was cool, similer to Fonzi, while looking like he was going to crush some folks, like Arnold.
Seriously…this dude is going as good as ever right now. My thoughts: If he keeps his running improving the way it is, he has potential to break the IM distance record, given a good course.
As Jurgen says when he signs off or says goodbye, “stay moist,” (whatever that means…)
Just curious as to your inferring to the Henshaw Loop. Is this a local riding route? Could you please elaborate on this specific route. I have friends in SD and would like to train on the local routes there when visiting.
