Yes, it’s that time of year, where the first tri of the Greater Vancouver area is upon us. Who’s in? Olympic or sprint? First time or seasoned UBC vet?
Finally: Snow or no snow on the ground? ![]()
See y’all there

I’ll be there, Oly distance at 11:30. It’s gonna be coooold!
Not me… I’m much too fat and out of shape (and you know, SLOW!) to be doing anything at this point. Booourns to me! lol
I’m supposed to be there for the Oly at 1130 too. But am tempted to stay away. Both because of the weather, and the reoccurance of my hernia this week. Hmm…
Though I do like the start time better than previous years!
Not I - I’ll be up at Callaghan for the IBU World Cup.
I’m calling for single digits and rain, but no snow @ UBC…
Not me!
I’ve always wondered why people do this race! I don’t get it! Pool swim, cold (& wet) weather almost guaranteed , I just don’t see the appeal… But that said, good luck to all of you racing Sunday, you are very brave!!!
I think cuz we’re idiots. Somehow, I secretly like to show off that I can run all of T1 soaking wet in bare feet in 3degC weather lol.
I am at 11:30 too I think!

You're my hero!
Somehow, I managed to finish in 3rd in my AG at the UBC Olympic distance tri yesterday - and two hours after finishing, it started snowing! So it did snow on race day, but not during the race - although it was as cold as a witch’s teat all day! Froze my ass off on the bike, really should have put on the knee warmers I packed.
One change from prior years - they moved the sprint swim to the outdoor pool to allow for more OLY heats, which was nice - previously they capped entries for OLY distance at something silly like two heats.
As always, a logistical nightmare but they manage to pull it off. Amazing when you think total # of participants is nearing 3000.
How’d others fare in the cold?

I had considered signing up for the race this year, but just didn’t feel like doing anything that short. Holy hell am I glad I didn’t.
Congrats on an awesome job!!! And now, let’s pout all day about the continued snow.
I rode past the madness on my way back from Richmond around noon. It was chilly out there, all the people riding in shorts (and one guy running in a trisuit) made me feel like kind of a wimp, bundled up in my dead-of-winter cycling gear.
Secretly while out on the bike I cursed myself for not signing up for the sprint just so I could get into a hot shower sooner… but I’m glad I stuck it out. Now 13 weeks til Oliver 1/2IM. Should be a wee bit warmer by then, eh? ![]()

3rd in you AG! Congrats, that’s awesome!
thx I was as surprised as can be… ![]()
Lol! Did you get some cool hardware? How did Phil do?
BTW, I’ll be in Oliver too (after racing an Xterra on June 6!)
Since I think Khai might be relatively MIA from the board this week, I’ll step in and ask a sarcastic question…
Were there only 3 people in your AG?
![]()
Lol! That’s mean!
Yes that was a cold one. I can’t believe the people riding with only tri suits, crazy. I got 5th in my AG, it was my first ever tri so I’ll take it! My swim really sucked though…15th in the group and it destroyed my #1 bike and #2 run. To the pool I go…
Exactly MOP (11/25). #2nd place swim, #14th bike and run, he’s made huge improvements there but not being on a bike in almost 3 months really took its toll on him. Overall a good start of the season for him. Oliver should be fun
We’ll all have to go for fud post-race… mmm… AP
LOL I totally expected that to be the case - when I saw I finished 3rd, I was even more surprised that there were 13 in the AG!
