Yvonne VAN VLERKEN - jet on a bike!

A friend emailed a linked to some negative comments made on this forum back on the 12/2/09 regarding her ride in Geelong Half Ironman. They have been removed.

I completed Geelong and rode the last half of the ride with Yvonee who started 5 minutes ahead of us old age groupers.
I think her ride time was about the 2.22 and I rode 2.18ish

Yvonne was a powerhouse on the bike and rode within the rules for the entire time she was with the age groupers. She was closely marked, by at time 2 draft busters on Motor cycles as was another female pro who was not far behind her. There were also several male pros on the road who also complied with the rules whilst out on the 24km ‘straight’ stretch of highway. The remainder of the 6km course through the botanical gardens was not policed by draft busters. In any event it was so tight and twisty it would have been impossible to police.

Yvonne actually expressed her concern to me when the rains came about the slippery road and I advised her to take the corners into transitions easy, which she did dropping back slightly.

For the 40 odd kms that I rode with Yvonne she showed she is a very very strong cyclists. Not once did I see her sitting on my wheel or anyone elses for that matter outside the rules. In fact there were times that when she felt the pace slowing she actually pushed the pace at the front. I can’t speak for the rest of the race. She was followed very closely by the officials and I dont believe she was caught breaking the rules.

My 10cents anyway.

This is just PRICELESS…

You admit your a cheater, but then come out saying she rode clean? Well, coming from you, that really means a lot!

Just because I said we rode in a group doesnt me we cheated you OT!

If you were actually at the race and osbserved 1150 odd bike riders all vying for space on a 30km circuit you would understand that groups of cyclists are inevitable. It was my first traithlon for many years and I pedalled my arse off for 90km and not once did I draft.

Riding in a group means you’re a giant douche at best, a giant cheating douche at worst. if you had “pedalled you arse off for 90km” you wouldn’t have been in the same group for all of it.

You suck.

There are two questions:

  1. Was she drafting?
  2. Did her boyfriend pace her through the race?

2 would be legal, I think, but, perhaps “not cool”

Can you comment on #2?

It’s douchebags like you that are killing the sport we love. It’s all very sad…

Ben:

I notice you are one of the first to criticize and call names, but I gotta ask when you last pedaled your ass off for 90k or raced so hard you wanted to, or did puke?

Seems to me it’s easy to criticize and pop-off from the cheap seats, but maybe you’d have more credibility if you actually raced.

Bob

This afternoon. What’s your next stupid question fatso?

Nice, someone asks a question and you call names.

That’s awesome, apparently the social code of whatever rock you live under doesn’t require the use of people skills.

All I ever see you do is pop off at people and that’s, IMHO is crap. I suggest you sign up and toe the line in a race. Otherwise keep your name-calling bullshit to yourself.

Bob

I’m perfectly nice to people that I respect. You’re just not one of them.

Oh, and I’ve raced plenty, further proof that you, as usual, don’t know what you’re talking about.

  1. Not that I could see
  2. Don’t know who her boyfriend is or if he was anywhere near us.

Lucky bloke though…

Douchebag hey, I been called much worse SMAO.

I love it when people, in their very post, make my point for me. Thanks dude.

Bob

WTF??? This is the stupidist post I’ve seen in weeks…or maybe the humour sailed way over my head.

I’m not gonna comment on the whole YVV thing 'cos its been beaten to death here already, but what’s wrong with riding in a “group”, assuming you’re keeping the legal distance?

This I must say is one of the most hilarious posts I have ever read on this forum. You respond as if this guy personally attacked your manhood- good gravy- its a stupid triathlon, who gives a f*&k. What a joke.

Yvonne actually expressed her concern to me when the rains came about the slippery road and I advised her to take the corners into transitions easy, which she did dropping back slightly.

just wondering! Can you actually hear each other and converse, at that speed (which i assume is fast based on your time) when you're 7 meters apart? I think i need to get my ears checked.

we can all have a friendly discussion without the unnecessary name calling, right? (this one is not for you)

In response to number 2… he was the guy dressed exactly like her who came into transition directly in front of her on the bike. This is shown in the pictures posted on the events website. These transparent attempts to resuscitate her destroyed reputation seem more pathetic every time they come up. If you talk to “her” again, tell her the fastest way to let this die would be to stop broaching the subject, and that regardless of what’s posted or what she donates, she will probably be watched much more closely in her next race.

That can happen quite a bit when you are legally passing each other. For instance, I’m heavy and descend better than most but climb worse than most. In many races I find myself evenly matched with someone nearby and on the continually rolling courses in my neck of the woods I end up leap frogging someone many times during the typical race. It makes me uncomfortable, but I’m going to ride my race as much as possible without breaking the passing rules.

x2.

John

Nothing, but that assumption is flawed. Sure, maybe small groups of pros can manage it all spaced out in a nice tidy line. AGers are incapable of it, the packs always look like pelotons with at least 2 or 3 abreast, especially on the more crowded courses like this one.

And don’t say that the draft marshals handle it, marshals miss at least 99% of transgressions at any given race.
