15 (well almost… 2 months)
Hallo Freestyle…
How often do you train, and how much??
How do you train, I’m running 2-3 times a week, and swimming 6. In the winter I don’t ride the bike a lot…
What’s your best times on, 1500 meters freestyle, 20 kilometers time trial, and 5 k road run??
Schmidt-DK
NO PAIN, NO GAIN
Well I average 10-20k of swimming, 100-150k of cycling, and 20-30k of running. This is done in 4-5 swims, 2 runs (one long, one tempo), 1 trainer, and one long bike followed by a middle distance run. Just finished my first season.
I never measured 1500m, I just ran a 19:30 5k, and I went 30:20 on a flat course a few weeks ago on the bike.
So far cycling has been my strength, but I really need to get my swimming up to a competitive level so I’ll be focusing on that this season.
What, you’re not even 15? Man, you need to be careful with that kind of cycling volume! Anyway, glad to see you’re focusing on your swimming
Paulo
With that much training during the week how are you doing any school work or homework?
I am 17 and a senior in high school and I can’t find the time for all the training you are doing.
hey schmidt/freestyle - good to see some other younger guys use this forum…im a bit older - just turned 18…and took up triathlon when i was 16, started training for triathlon day after 17th birthday (i got a bike!)
I cant believe the volume your doing at your age freestyle…wish id started that young…main thing if you want to be competive as a Jnr though is to swim swim swim and swim hard! Jnrs I swim against are generally sub 4.30 for 400m and front pack are sub 4.15…thats quick!!
I’m even luckier than you guys in that I finished school in June…and took up triathlon training full time in September…so my weekly mileage has increased 10 fold…8 swims…4-450k biking (plus about 100k biking to the pool each day - wish i had a car, but its good kenyan training as gordo puts it and 5/6 runs…
Obviously intensity and duration of each leg varys hugely…il sometimes only swim 20k…sometimes 40…equally sometimes run 4.5hrs total…somtimes 8-10!
Keep it up, and get in that pool!
Hey man!
Yeah, they’re actually quite a few of us on here. Lots of underclassmen in college floating around here too. I’m 16 right now and started training for triathlons when I was 14. Pretty much what freestyle is doin’. Though right now I’m just swimming since you know, it’s cold here in Pa and there’s snow. Not too great of weather to go outside and not get sick.
Drop me an e-mail, which you can find in my profile here, and we can chat sometime.
You picked a great sport to get into though. Espacially at our ages. It’s fun finsihing and getting all of the amazed looks from everyone else at a race. It’s a real sense of accomplishment and glory.
Keep training hard.
s’right there’re a few of us college folks. so i’m 18, started the tri’s a year and a half ago - i’m an aight runner(did 19 early early this past summer) maybe a little worse at biking and an atrocious swimmer. my time now is invested in rowing here at school - a great sport that has gotten me quite a bit stronger. i’m definitely looking forward to the coming season - doing basework now, mostly rowing, some swimming - and some skiing!!

Yeah I’m gonna cut down a bit on the cycling (maybe only one ride?) and try to fit in the extra swimming.
Personally I don’t see the problem. I have school from 8-3, then I do some homework blah blah, meet with friends, and my practices are either at 6:30 or 7:30 pm. Friday is my sleep-in day =)
One question, why is cycling dangerous? I thought it was a lot less impactish than running?
Hei…
I’m doing 17.32 on a 1500 meter, 32.00 on a 20 K flat, and running about 18-18.30 on a 5 k road.
Schmidt, DK!
haha jk
Schmidt are you a swimmer/where you a swimmer? Got any tips on how to improve (my swimming)?
oh man i wish i could swim 17:xx
Hei Freestyle…
I’m a swimmer (12 hours/week), longdistance. 4.28 400 m and 9.13 800 m.
Do you train with a club?? Maybe you should join a swimclub…
Schmidt
wow schmidt, i wish i could swim like you!
Is that Short or Long course time - with swimming like that, you will lead any frontpack in Jnr racing, and sit comfortably with any male pro in the business!
I’m at about 21 minutes…miles off! But thats my real weakness…about 27/28 on 20k tt and about 16 for a 5k…
im still in shock about that swimming though!
Yea I do swim with a club, but they only have 3 orginized swim practices a week (it’s not a swim club, it’s a tri one) so I have to do 1-3 more workouts on my own =
.
Freestyle,
When I started out I trainined twice a week with Tri-clu and 1-2 on my own - dont do it!
Its fine if you want to be an ok swimmer…but to swim well in a drafting race you have to put in 25-40k a week - the only sensible way is to get into a swim club…the standard will lift you so much higher!
Yeah, that’s right… I’m swimming more in the winter, than in the summer. It would help you a lot…
A question:
What do yout country do for you and other youth athletes?? Do you get any help?
Schmidt,
NO PAIN, NO GAIN
The country I don’t know… the Triathlon Organization just opened up a bordingschool (not sure if that’s the word) for ‘gifted athletes’ up in the north, but it’s like 7 hours from home so I’m not sure I wanna go… Maybe in a few years…
The problem is I’m afraid to try high mileage again… Last year I was swimming 20-30k per week in 3 practices, and the most improvement I’ve seen was going from 7:00 for 400 (after a 6 month break in swimming) to 6:40 in 2 weeks, then again to 6:20 after 10 months of training.
Then I moved to a new team where we swam like 3-4k maximum, twice a week for the first 3 weeks, and I dropped to 6:00, then I moved it up to 3 practices and my times dropped to where they are now (around 5:35-5:40).
Ok… Well… I’m swimming 6 times a week… And you need to swim that much to go under 4.50!! Talk to the local swimclub… I’m sure they can help you, and maybe only swim and run for a long time… Maybe the next season! Of course a few kilometers on the bike.
Schmidt…
Yeah I need to make a plan with my coach. I thought I’d focus on cycling this season, but a few people advised my against it, so I’ll stick with only one ride per week this winter.
And I did talk with the swim coach at the place where we train (it’s a big place with a few pools), but he said they don’t take none-swimmers. f*cker.
Oh well, our current coach was a russian swimmer 20 years back, he was a 1:52 200 free swimmer. He’s a good coach, but he doesn’t speak our language too well =/
My goal this season is to go sub 5:00, does anyone think I’m aiming too high?
