Don’t have a kid in one so my opinion is strictly based on anecdotes and observations. (Also due to my schedule and wife’s daycare would never be an option, nanny or family will watch little windys as they grow from breezes into gusts).
To me they seem to a combination of Lord of the Flies, a kennel, and a TB ward. Violence, lack of attention, and perpetual illness respectively. It doesn’t matter if cheap or the most expensive. Almost uniformly people would prefer nanny, family, or staying at home but daycare is more cost effective.
My kids have obviously learnt something as they speak french
Our issue has always been that the kids routine is disrupted, I. E. Our three year old only naps for 30 mins. At nursery she’s down for 2 hours then up till 10pm

That’s doesn’t sound good. You’ve seen this? Never had any experience like that. I recall there were state laws for child/teacher ratio which allowed for a lot of attention.

The ratio is anywhere from 5 to 1 to 8 to 1 age dependent. I’m just basing it off of what people talk about at work, parties, family events. I’ve seen the illness for sure in person and people taking PTO because their kid is sick
Our children went to daycare. I always felt it was the best of both worlds. During the day, they had social interaction and social dynamics. At night, they had undivided attention from us.
Now, our grandchildren are in daycare. One is 4 and they work weekly on counting, alphabet, penmanship, foreign language and computers.
We are transitioning from nanny to daycare right now. Our nanny is great, but, she is expensive as hell and moving for school soon, and we are thinking a small group setting would be good for helping to socialize our little monster a bit more.
We found a private daycare in our area. One lady and her adult daughter helps out. 5 kids, aged five to two. We we’re thoroughly impressed by how she teaches the kids and let’s them figure out certain things on her own. She has the older kids buddy up with and teach things to the younger ones. It’s also a steal at $1000 a month for 4 days a week.

Daycares better for the kids, Nannies better for the parents.
+1. Plus what harbinger posted. Slight twist. With infants maybe nannie is best till child’s immune system matures. Toddlers in daycare for social interplay and preschool emphasis.

We’re paying $225/week for 5 days.
Well la-dee freakin’ dah!!! Childcare here, like everything, is expensive.
You can’t even buy a burger in BC for $225.
How the hell does anyone make money charging that little? If you have 4 or 5 kids and one person running the show, you’re only bringing in 900-1125 a week before your expenses.
ETA: our nanny is around $2500/mth, for 4 days a week and we share that cost with another family a few days a week. If we had her full time for just our kid it would be around $3500. Plus she uses our vehicle, so, gas, extra heating cost for having people at home all day, etc. It really adds up.
