Your Definition of FTP?

Lots of people throw around ‘FTP’ on this forum. Just curious how many definitions of FTP there are on this board. Go.

For the practical purpose of training with power, I personally define FTP as the wattage I could ride for one hour straight most days of the week. I have a friend who uses his absolute best possible one hour power under ideal conditions and well rested. To me that makes no sense, since the majority of training is done on less than perfect legs.

Why doesn’t it make sense? FTP is higher when you’re tapered than when training.

Kind of depends on how you’re using it. If you’re using it to measure training effectiveness, yours is the choice. If you’re using it to gauge sustainable effort during a race, than the race-ready version is better.

If you’re using it to report on this forum, then the higher one, obviously.

preach.

That’s a good point, I suppose my friend’s FTP is more practical for A races. We have been training indoors quite a bit this winter though, and I mainly use my FTP on trainerroad for selecting workout intensity.

My definition of FTP is: A number that reminds me how inadequate a cyclist I really am.
