Your best dumb injuries

I’ve injured myself twice this season, thankfully the second one was while I was already on the disabled list.

#1 I screwed my hip up having intimate relations with my SO (not during something crazy). This caused me to not be able to run for 4 weeks. I now do a light warm-up/stretch before going to bed.

#2 I somehow wrecked my foot while unloading a keg from the back of my trunk. I didn’t bang it, but it feels like a stress fracture or strain on the outside of my foot. Maybe rroof can chime in on possible problems, but nonetheless, setting up for a party put me on my butt for an additional 3 weeks.

My season isn’t ruined, but definitely dampened.

Stubbed my toe one time the day before a local 5 kms charity run. Ran anyways but it wasn’t fun.

All of my injuries have been dumb.

The latest: Stepped on a sharp kids toy that gave me a large heel bruise/blood blister just a few days before my A race.

I once broke a toe playing dodgebal with my one of my childrens martial arts classes. The parent of one of these students, who was also a buddy gave me this advice.

“Jim, when you get home, pull out your drivers license, take a look at it, note your birthdate, translate that to your age and remember that number next time you want to play dodge ball”

A complete rupture of my achilles tendon in October 06 while competing in a beer drinking contest that required running.

About 15 minutes before the starting cannon of IMLP this year I was swimming around and stood on the bottom of Mirror Lake and felt a nail pierce the bottom of my foot.

Had a nice hole in the bottom of my right foot for the next 140.6 and damn did it hurt like hell. Teatus shot 2 days later hurt a HELL of a lot more.

Is there such a thing as a good dumb injury?

Blew out a hip flexor doing the classic stationary I-can’t-unclip-oh-shit! fall at a stop sign. That was dumb.

2 staples in my scalp taking a header over my bars trying to take a 2-foot drop at about 3 mph. That was really dumb.

I broke my hand falling off my bike while it was on a trainer. Had a cast for 4 weeks.

I walked barefoot 1/2 mile on hot pavement, concrete, grass and sand and got 2nd degree burns on both feet (the balls of both feet…two inch diameter blisters). I then walked back barefoot 1/2 mil on hot pavement, concrete, grass and sand and got 2nd degree burns on both feet (the heels of both feet…two inch diameter blisters). I couldn’t walk comfortably for a week. In retrosprect, it wasn’t the walking on the hot pavement that did it, it was the pedicure the afternoon before.

I kicked a rock in the ocean and broke my toe in two places. I finished a 2 mile swim and was waiting for a couple friends to finish. I was standing in ankle deep water and a very little wave (about 6 inches) knocked me off balance. There was a submerged rock. I couldn’t run for a week.

This all hapened w/in 4 months this spring/summer.

2nd sprint of the this year. After setting up T1, I was too lazy to walk around the ‘snow fence’ so I hoped it, came down on an ankle and ripped the tendon off the bone. 10 weeks of laziness later, I’m wondering if I should even bother attempting The Canadian this weekend.

I threw out my back while making pancakes, three weeks before my first Ironman. How dumb is that! Worse than Sammy Sosa doing it when he sneezed.

Did the ‘water-skiing splits’ three weeks before A-race. Even thought water-skiing wasn’t a wise thing to do before doing it so deserve no sympathy…still recovering now @5wks

  1. Junior year of college, I sprained my wrist when I was turning the key to start my car. Damn, I hated that car.

  2. Senior year of college, decided it would be a good idea to learn how to luge the weekend before league meet. I ended up giving myself a giant hematoma when I managed to smack my elbow on the side of the run going 30+mph. The friction melted the nylon in the coat I was wearing. The following Monday, I could barely swim freestyle because it hurt so bad when the megabruise made contact with the water.

My ‘dumb injuries’ fall under the category of Running Too Much And Getting Stress Reactions And Then Running Until The Bone Really Cracks.

Two Novembers ago, I woke up to a bit of snow and went out for a run. I could feel a little twinge near one of my toes that didn’t feel quite right, but I still ran on it. Ten miles later, metatarsal fracture. I remember standing under a hot shower for so long, just crying.

Early last October, I had a tender area over my left tibia, right above the lateral mallelous. My first sfx was the same spot on the right tibia. Since I didn’t have any point-tenderness, I ran all through October. I went to the island on October 28 to run around Eagle Lake. We had a storm sky - I can still picture the gray clouds of a tempest behind red and orange leaves. Almost at the first signpost, I stepped down and I felt that bone crack, like you’d feel an eggshell crack when you tap it against a bowl. Subtle, shattering.

  1. Broke my toe on my bike trainer. I was doing a little “I’m excited to get on my trainer dance”. WHAM! SNAP! Still did the workout

  1. Running 8 weeks before IM. Hopped up on a curb, hit a crack in the sidewalk and fell right on my knee. Cracked patella plus cartilage or ligament damage = most painful 26.2 I could ever imagine!

Injured my knee jumping on a trampoline at my daughter’s birthday party in February 2006. It messed with my IM training all year leading up to IM Moo.

I threw out my back while making pancakes, three weeks before my first Ironman. How dumb is that! Worse than Sammy Sosa doing it when he sneezed.
I don’t feel so bad about mine after reading some of these posts. Making pancakes!?!??!? That’s pretty bad. Wasn’t there a great major league pitcher who missed the playoffs because he tripped over his dog a few years ago?

Torn tendons on my left index finger wrestling over a ball while playng my first game of dodgeball in over 30 years.

I was waiting for you to pop into this thread, you klutz!

  1. I broke my left pinkie toe playing drunken frisbee games. I got the disc, though!

  2. Once again drinking, I tried opening a door and pulled my hamstring, quad, glute, and groin.

Sometimes I wonder how smart my future career choice as a surgeon is…

Wow, that was quick. I can relate, though. I’m an injury prone future physical therapist. I can imagine you doing open heart surgery, tripping with a scapel in your hand and slicing off the patient’s penis.
